Seeking builder recommendations for half-house loft conversion

Hi All, My husband and I plan on doing a loft conversion on our Victorian 'half house' in SE22 and looking for recommendations from people who live in half houses and have gone through a similar process. If you have, would love to hear more about your experience with party wall agreements etc (as there are issues unique to these types of houses), and what builder you used. We are looking for someone who has a lot of experience with half house loft conversions to ensure it's a smooth process.

Thank you!

We live in a half house in Bovill Road SE23 where around 50% have gone upwards; the many have been handled by Central London Lofts who seem to do a decent job at a reasonable price. Our (front door) neighbours went down this route and there was relatively little disruption for us with the exception of scaffolding.

We went down a much more complicated route as we wanted a very different look from the standard and had a full roof covered scaffold; this was more disruptive to the neighbours but they were fantastic as we kept them informed all the way.

Consider having a chat with your immediate neighbour and see if they are planning a similar build; if so it may be an option to consider a shared steel down the (dividing) wall from which you can both build off. This may be a sweetener for the neighbour too

Go onto the Lewisham (or Southwark)planning portal and see what has been done by others; its really useful and helped us a great deal when we extended both the loft (six years ago) then the kitchen last year

One other thing we did was chat to neighbours who had already extended upwards and if possible have a look to see how they did it (difficult ATM).

To finish it really is well worth doing; we absolutely love the space

Hope this helps a bit and feel free to pm me if i can help more

Good luck

My neighbor had theirs done last year and used a company called Hamilton Walters and was very pleased with their service and the loft looks great! I?m considering getting mine done this year and will certainly be using the same guys!

Hello Emz

If you are looking for inspiration for a half house, my book How to Extend your Victorian Terraced House, features an East Dulwich half house as one of its case studies.

    • Hi - a friend sent me this link…   The car is neither abandoned nor stolen! (Nor ever has been, so not sure why that has been suggested). It is mine, I collected it from service (and MOT as identified by some on here) on Friday, driving home it had a bit of a hissy fit and broke down! AA attended on Friday, could not recover it until this morning. Spoken to the nice people inside Westminster carpet on Friday who couldn’t have been kinder, I moved the car back from the doors of the property as best I could without blocking more parking spaces. Recovery should be here imminently. Apologies for any inconvenience.
    • That's very odd if they won't answer. Do they just say "no, we won't tell you that"? I can understand they wouldn't want you to get the bread direct from their source instead of from them, but why not just say that? If they baked it themselves, I imagine they would be only too happy to let people know.
    • Possibly one of the other local garage owners may know? Also, it's possible if the owners and staff are still in the area that they might see your post. They didn't post on here themselves (to the best of my knowledge) but they must have known that I did, as a couple of times the lady who worked in reception phoned me to ask me if I could  post in the "Lost" section when something dropped in Hansler Road had been handed in to them. Unfortunately I only have their office landline  number, which presumably disappeared when they closed. Good luck! Hopefully your service manual may turn up in an unexpected place.
    • Well, that was my initial thought too, but having re-read the thread, it seems that the car was left outside Westminster Carpets. Maybe even middle-aged Lotharios can't ignore the low, low prices in their 'Remnants, Offcuts & Roll-End Sale'.   Do you know anyone with a second generation Fiat Punto (1999-2010)? Because 5 to 1, the key will fit.  I'm out of the country, watching the cricket, just now but if you can get it down to the Catford/Sydenham borders in the next couple of hours, I've got a mate who can 'look after' it. It'll be at Tilbury docks by 6 o'clock. Have you ever driven a car with an F1 style, flappy paddle gearbox before?
