Simple phone query - now resolved, ty

I've recently bought a used Nokia N85 mobile. I was told it was unlocked but using standard mini-SIMs from Virgin and Asdamobile that work fine in a 2G phone gives a "SIM card not valid" message. The phone came in a box with an unused Orange mini-SIM which came as part of the original package, with the SIM number on the box. When I try that SIM I get a "SIM card registration failed" message. Am I right in assuming that the phone is still locked to Orange?

Yes phone is locked or maybe blocked.
