Hi everyone,

I am not sure where to start looking, so l try it here.

My daughter (10) would love to play a flute.

Is this very difficult? She plays the recorder and the violin.

Where to buy a beginners flute and how much could that be.

Any idea about the prices for lessons and could you

recommend a teacher?

Anything else l should consider?

Thanks enjoy

Hi Enjoy

I used to work as a professional flautist (and still play regularly), so can help with your questions.

10 is a good age to begin, especially if she has musical experience on recorder. I had my first flute lesson at 10, having had a few years of recorder lessons prior to that. It can be tricky to master the embouchure and get a clear sound to begin with, but the fingerings are fairly similar to recorder. Tone comes with practise.

Beginner flutes range greatly in quality and price. I had a hired instrument for the first 2 years of playing, and once my parents felt sure I was going to continue playing I got my first flute (a Yamaha student model). This flute lasted me right through till I did grade 8, after which I upgraded to a professional model.

The flute does make a difference, even for absolute beginners, so personally I would steer clear of really cheap ones if you can. Yamaha and Pearl make good beginner flutes. I would recommend going to a specialist shop like Just Flutes (South Croyden) or Topwinds (Waterloo) and chatting to them about your options.

The price of lessons will vary depending on the experience and qualifications of the teacher, ballpark I would expect to pay around ?30 - ?40 an hour (lessons would probably start at 30 mins). It is worth approaching teachers to see if they will do a joint lesson for your daughter and another beginner - it makes it a bit more fun and cuts the costs down a bit (I do this for my sons recorder lessons, he shares with another student).

I'm afraid I don't know of any local teachers, although I'm sure there must be a few. Give me a couple of years (once all my kids are safely in school) and I plan to take up teaching again!

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Two of my sons have been learning for a while. I can recommend a lovely local teacher, Naomi Chant. Otherwise you can contact JASSPA where individual lessons are held, as well as theory lessons and the Big Band/orchestra. One of my children has been going there for a term, loves it and is doing v.well.

Hi Enjoy

I run a local music teaching service and have some lovely local flute teachers who'd be delighted to teach your daughter. I'd agree with everything Pickle says - 10's a great age to start, and excellent she's had the recorder and violin experience - she'll hit the ground running. Also agree with Pickle's advice on instruments - avoid false economy of cheap ones - another hire option is Howarths in Chiltern Street W1, wind specialists.

With regards lessons, my teachers are professional musicians, experienced at teaching, and CRB checked. Passionate about flute, and really love teaching. Happy to come to your house at a time to suit you. Lesson fees are ?20 for 30mins, ?25 for 45mins, ?30 for an hour and so on.

If this sounds good, do give me a call or an email and we'll take it from there. I'd love to hear from you.

Hi all,

thanks to many helpful tips and some months later we managed to hire a flute for my daughter.

She is so excited.

Now we need an experienced teacher for her. Somebody who is caring, fun and able to come to our house in SE24.

Please pm me if you know somebody or if you can offer lessons.

enjoy

I don't have first hand experience of local teachers I'm afraid, but am happy to do a one off to get her started (basics of putting the instrument together, care, and the first few notes) if you like? PM me if you are interested. I'm not in a position to offer permanent lessons at the moment as my kids are too young.

You might be interested to come to the next Opal Flutes concert? A chance to hear lots of flutes in action, with piccolos, alto and bass flutes too. It's aimed at children and details are:

    • It looks as though there will be 10 of us!  We are going to Love Dulwich again for a lunch and will checkout their 'normal' menu - from what we remember from the last 2 times we went = there was plenty to satisfy every one and they were happy to take party bookings.- Hubby and I have worked out that if all our daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren were  to come - there would be 20 of us!! As it is - the Essex  family branch live too far away to come over for an evening - so we will meet up in Essex at a later date.

    • Just to warn anyone thinking of employing or engaging Chris and Anna Richmond, that nothing has changed.  The accounts above from others are all too familiar.  A job that we were told would take between 6-8 months is now entering its 23rd month.  They have taken enormous amounts of money from us, finished nothing, and the quality of the work that they have delivered is poor to substandard.  They take no responsibility themselves - there are endless excuses and everything is someone else's fault.  They do not care about the impact that their actions have on anyone else.   They are, at best, chaotic. They have not delivered as the designers or project managers that they claim to be. They are rarely on site to monitor the progress or quality of the job that is being delivered and they and manage their largely non-English speaking workforce by WhatsApp and Google translate.  There has been little evidence that they employ the skilled tradespeople needed to lay tiles, install bathrooms and kitchens, decorate and complete to the standard that we have paid for.  I cannot stress enough, that if you are currently in discussion with Anna and Chris Richmond about a future job or have paid them money up front for a job that they have slipped in delivering, to quit while you are ahead.  Things won't get better.
    • Hi All, I’d like to recommend Aaron Manser, who several others on this forum have also used. Aaron is an excellent plasterer, and has just finished a complicated piece of plastering work for me, including a large expanse of ceiling. His work has been of the highest quality, his attention to detail is exceptional, and he’s also very quick, and tidy too. As an added bonus he has a lovely singing voice. Happy to provide any photos of the work he has done. This is the third time over the past few years I’ve had Aaron back. Aaron Manser - 07773 410661 Regards, Damien
