after 15 years in the charity sector I have decided to jump ship. I just can no longer survive on 3 month contracts, and fed up of working all hours to keep getting more into debt...

so I'm looking for a job in the private sector, but have absolutely no clue how to start. Do people think such a change is possible? Surely there are loads of transferable skills - but is the culture too different, and will they just throw the CV in the bin???

Getting a job in the private / charity / public sector is much the same. Look at your CV, highlight your skills, match skills to employer's needs and apply. The private sector isn't a closed shop - in my experience across all three sectors it's far more relaxed about where you obtained your experience but very keen to test exactly what your experience, and hence skils, can offer them.

In contrast - try joining the NHS as a middle manager without previous NHS experience.

Depending on what your skillset is and what job you're after, try registering with a few agencies (if possible, specialist agencies). We do most of our recruiting through them as (usually) they are pretty good at shortlisting good candidates. And of course, they do the searching for you.

I'd also echo what MM said - match your CV to the job you're applying for. A lot of skills and experience these days are highly transferable, but it's up to you, in your CV and in the interview, to highlight this.

Good luck.

    • Yes, still odd. Their information seems mostly to have come from the social media post referred to above. And, as you say , reported "cautiously".
    • I have taken books to the Oxfam book shop in Herne Hill in the past and found they had a limit on how many bags they would accept from one person, so worth checking in advance if they have any current restrictions, don't want to lug a heavy bag out of the car and be told they won't accept. I was able to park nearby - in the side street on the other side of the road, but I do know it's luck of the draw how far down that street you have to go to get a space.
    • I would phone ahead to check whether they are accepting donations. I’ve been in the shop a couple of times over the past few years and seen people turned away with book donations. There are a few parking spaces outside the row of shops there and it’s sometimes pot luck but I’ve usually parked ok. Let us know how it goes Sue.   l
    • Hussein and his team have just finished painting our main reception room, kitchen and hallway throughout the house. We also threw a few extra curve balls in while we were away like painting the front door, garden walls and helping fit some new lights. Hussein is a pleasure to deal with: professional, diligent, trust worthy, flexible and a really nice bloke. This is the second time we have worked with him and will definitely do so again.
