How to recycle a bath tub

Hello!

We are just about to redo our bathroom and I'm wondering how to dispose of the old bath without having to pay for a skip or the council to remove it. Does anybody know of local recycling companies or similar?

I dont think the council charges to take away large items of rubbish - much better than just flytipping in the hope someone else will "rescue" it.

As WOD says - if it's metal, just leave it outside your house and it will be gone in a couple of hours.

The Southwark Council Bulky Waste people will not take away anything over 6ft long and they won't touch any bathroom stuff like baths, toilets, bidets, sinks etc.

Put it outside; it'll be gone within 24 hours if it's metal

I put mine out on Upland Road last year, when I looked out the window 20 minutes later it had disappeared

FWIW the recycling centre off the Old Kent Road (Devon Road) is really good at this sort of thing. You can actually go there and see if there is anything you want as they themselves recycle stuff. You can phone them and ask if them the details. You could also see if LASSCO may be interested in it.

I rang a scrap dealer and asked if he would buy my old steel bath- he said yeah - where are you?- leave it out and Ill take a look at it and make you an offer I went out and left builders here- 45 mins later he was here - told builders it wasn't worth much but would take it off our hands- it was gone.

Also there are people in vans driving round ALL the time looking for scrap/ nickable stuff. You see them screech to a halt if they see a skip - rifle through it and move off with a handful of stuff.

What are you lot like

First question is it cast iron.

If yes, then is it worth something (either cash or for free) then e-bay it or freecycle it.

If it is cast iron and not worth anything smack it with a lump hammer and it will break into pieces which you can then put in your recycling bin. If Southwark don't recycle steel then sneak into Lewisham and put it in a green bin outside someone's house.

How to tell if it is cast iron? Thick and heavy. And a nice ring when you hit it.

The street people will also probably take it away for you whatever.

Also the vans that roam looking for scrap some of them will also take a fiver to take less valuable stuff away - they tend to have trucks that are cages with a sign up about licensed waste collectors or something like that.
