free social cycle rides Saturday April 24th

Recommended Posts

This week we have 3 rides, 14 places, with registration on Eventbrite as usual. Note if all places are already booked it is worth checking back as we may be able to add an extra wave and also there are usually several cancellations during the week.

You must register on Eventbrite, details below. Please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling.

Ride details

Dulwich to Wimbledon Park. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-park-to-wimbledon-park-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-151438624001

Jean has a new route planned for this ride ? sounds good. 15 miles. 10am ?12.30pm. Start/finish Dulwich Clock Caf?, Dulwich Park SE21 7BQ. Route: Dulwich park via Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common to Wimbledon Park. Return same route. Mostly quiet streets, occasional busy junction, lots of easily cycled paths in the parks and on the commons. Coffee stop in Wimbledon Park.

Canada Water to South Bank, CW1-CW14 Loop. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-south-bank-cw1-cw14-loop-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-151437661121

Bruce leading. Easy, flat route using the local Cycleways. 9 miles. 10am ? 12 noon. Start/finish Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Outward ride via Greenland Dock and Oldfield Grove to CW1 at Millwall Stadium (New Den). Head westward along CW1 passing South Bermondsey Station, crossing Tower Bridge Road, though Trinity Square, past the Old Vic and through to the South Bank close to the National Theatre. Return along Upper Ground to Blackfriars Rd, short stretch of CW6, then pick up CW 14 and head eastward past Guys Hospital, across Bermondsey St to Jamaica Rd at Dockhead. Choice of routes here. Probably use the new Cycleway 4 to the Rotherhithe Tunnel Roundabout, then rejoin CW14 for last stretch past Rotherhithe Station and back to Canada Water. Route map at

Canada Water, Greenwich, Tower Bridge Loop. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-greenwich-tower-bridge-loop-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-151457002973

Start/finish Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Easy 10 mile loop using DLR to cross river at Greenwich (travel pass or equivalent needed) and returning over Tower Bridge (or possibly London Bridge). No hills, mostly off road or quiet streets. Tower Bridge can be busy, but strict 20 mph and no awkward side turnings, so not as bad as people think. Lots to see always on the river. Simon leading.

We will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Most importantly we will be maintaining routinely a 2m social distance, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Remember to bring a face mask. Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

All these rides were booked up by Tuesday. In response the organiser has created a second wave of 6 on the Dulwich-Wimbledon Ride. There are also places on the other 2 rides including 4 on the South Bank ride due to a family cancelling. The forecast is sunny but cool (12 degrees )- excellent cycling weather!

    • Disagree. Where are the police when you need them? People want a police presence, they want to feel reassured by seeing them do what the word suggests, policing, so go catch some bad guys, arrest, charge and get the CPS to prosecute with the evidence to enable this to happen. Stabbing and shootings are so common place they no longer even get reported in the public domain. How many crimes don't get solved? Rather case closed and forgotten. The number of low to high level crimes which remain unsolved is staggering.  The criminal fraternity know this, they know they won't get caught so they just carry on.  Biggest crimes which affect most people, probably are phone and car theft, both are prolific and what do the police do, diddly squat. zilch, nothing, provide a crime reference number and the case is closed. Not good enough, not by a country mile.   Met Engage? I don't think so.

Recent data suggests a drop in violent crime. Gang violence will make a significant contribution to the numbers. You are unlikely to be attacked by a stranger
    • Unfortunately there are plenty of shops which don't care and will sell vapes, alcohol and weed to minors, I'm sure they won't care about selling them fireworks. Or the kids nick them.
    • It’s getting a bit annoying. We’ve a nervous dog who trembles when they go off. I know to expect it around Halloween and Diwali but it seems to be happening more through the year.
