free social cycle rides Saturday May 8th

Recommended Posts

This Saturday we have 2 rides, one 2 hours and flat, the other 3 hours and hilly.

Registration on Eventbrite as usual. Note if all places are already booked it is worth checking back as there are usually several cancellations during the week.

You must register on Eventbrite, details below. Please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling.

Five Great views of SE London https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/five-great-views-of-se-london-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-153361170389

Usual easy-paced ride, but you do not get views without climbing hills. 10am start at Peckham Square, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. Approx. 3 hours. Route: Brockley / Hilly Fields park / Brook mill Park / Blackheath / Greenwich Park Observatory / National Maritime museum and back to Peckham Square. Mostly using quiet back routes. The idea will be to spend a few minutes at each viewpoint and also take in a brief social coffee stop midway time permitting. Jamie leading.

Goodbye Ursula ? Tideway Tunnel Ride https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/goodbye-ursula-tideway-tunnel-cycle-ride-tickets-153362281713

10am to 12 noon. Flat 10 mile ride so pretty easy-paced. Lots of segregated cycle lane, some busier stretches. Bruce leading.

Start/finish Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train. Finish at Cherry Garden/Chambers Wharf (SE16 4TX). Note getting back to London Bridge is easy using Cycleway 4.

Inspiration for this ride is the departure of Tunnel Boring Machine Ursula from Chambers Wharf. Ursula has finished her 7.5km journey from Battersea and is heading off to Rotterdam on Saturday. The gamble is that she will not depart until high tide (12.55pm). If you are joining the ride from the east or south east, then suggest you ride to the start via Cherry Garden and take a look.

Ride will retrace Ursula?s journey. We will cross London Bridge and ride Cycleway 3 and the embankment to Chelsea Bridge, passing the Thames Tideway sites at Blackfriars and Victoria Embankment. From Chelsea Bridge we will head back, first stopping to look at the Kirtling Rd site, next to Battersea Power Station, from which Ursula set out. Return route will follow the Thames passing another TT site at Albert Embankment. We may save time by using cycleway 14 from Blackfriars to Jamaica Rd. Route on Google Maps at

For anyone interested, Ursula?s schedule is: Thursday May 6th, large floating crane arrives, Friday 7th Transfer of Ursula to barge. There is of course no guarantee the engineers will be able to keep to this schedule, but we will have a ride along the Thames anyway.

Important - read the detailed instructions regarding Covid regs on Eventbrite when registering. These rides are organised by Bruce Lynn on behalf of Southwark Cyclists who are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. You can contact Bruce on 07729 279 945

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).

    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
