Hi,

I have had several flare up recently which have lasted longer than normal and loathe taking pain killers but really need to do something to address this since even walking is proving difficult.

Have any of you good people in ED found anything naturally that has helped and also roughly how long it has taken to kick in?

Has a change of diet helped? I don?t eat red meat but do eat salmon and chicken.

Thanks in advance and have a good weekend.

I have found 'Foods That Fight Pain: Revolutionary New Strategies for Maximum Pain Relief' by Neal D. Barnard MD to be a very helpful point of reference over the years. Looks at multiple inflammatory conditions including arthritis. You can find second-hand copies online. Vegetables from the deadly nightshade family (potato, aubergine etc) are supposed to be a cause of inflammation in the body - I have not been able to stop eating them entirely, but have reduced how often I eat them!

Turmeric is a strong anti-inflammatory, as is ginger. Also massaging the affected joint with warming oils designed to reduce inflammation like ayurvedic/neals yard warming oil etc. can be very helpful.

The weather (damp, cold) this year has been dire for inflammatory conditions and my knees have been in and out of flare-up. They cope far better with dry, warm conditions. Making sure you have the heating on if necessary or a heat pad will help to reduce the impact.

I have found avoiding food from the nightshade family very effective, although I still eat potatoes as they don?t seem to impact my joints. I cut down a significant amount of dairy and saw an improvement too.

I swear by a bath in Epsom salts and also herbal oils such as arnica when I have a flare up. Try to get lots of rest and whilst you are in a flare up, it is nectar for you!

Good luck and I hope your flare up calms down very soon.

You could try a few or all of the following depending on what works for you and in accordance with your doctor's advice:

Stop drinking milk. Especially cows's milk. I cut milk out, still have some good cheese and quality butter now and then, and nice cream with desserts etc. but stopped drinking milk and switched to oatmilk. Felt better quickly and lost a little weight.

Cherry pills. They sell these on Lordship Lane. Seem to be good for joints.

Cut down on coffee or cut it out completely.

Alkaline herbal tea. Available on LSL and helps a lot, I reckon. Makes you wee but worth it. Swapped this for coffee.

Have long baths with good salts.

Try wearing or not wearing socks in bed, wear different shoes every day and always take them off soon as you're home.

Sleep with the window open.

Look into acupuncture. I was dubious and now swear by it.

If you drink alcohol then cut down or stop.

Consider the different types of iron in different foods and make sure you're getting the right type of iron - this probably means avoiding lots of oysters and venison, for example! Love them but they're just for more occasional treats these days.

Good luck!

    • There seems to be a change in the reception staff - did not recognise a couple of them when I last visited.  Not sure whether one of the long term staff has retired as not seen her for a while.  Used on line facility as my podiatrist recommended antibiotics for a toe infection and also took photo of my toe which I attached yo my request. Got a message back within a day to say medication ordered from chemist.

    • Oh give it a break.  We have an MP who makes racist comments, yet our media (and what seems like this Forum) that generally hate Labour (and loved Johnson) are just out looking for the dirt. It's a move on, nothing to see here.  Particularly if she used a letting agency.
