Rides for Saturday 29th May aka Bank Holiday Weekend

Exploring Dulwich

Did you know Dulwich has a castle, and football and cycling stadiums, even a Toll Booth!? Come on this easy 9 mile, 2 hour ride and be amazed.

Start Dulwich Park Cafe, then up to Dawsons Heights for the view. Next across to Dulwich Hamlet football stadium and down Greendale to Dulwich Village. Continuing south past Dulwich Picture Gallery and Dulwich College to the only Toll Gate in London. Then loop up to Kingswood House, aka Bovril Castle, back through Bel Air Park, on to Herne Hill Velodrome, and back to Dulwich Park. Bruce leading. Google map: https://goo.gl/CJRHNu

Cutty Sark to Cody Dock via Woolwich.

Cody Dock is one of those places that is guaranteed to renew your faith in the human race! Come and find out why. Amanda leading. Here are her notes on the ride. "Cody Dock is open and looking forward to our visit. The dock is in a bit of a state though as a new cafe is being built where that old ship was and there is a lack of seating (temporary cafe is now situated at the main entrance. There is a porta-loo. Route: Thames Path - O2 - Thames Barrier - Woolwich Ferry - City Airport - Beckton Park - Greenway ? River Lee Path - Three Mills - Cody Dock - Canning Town/Bow Creek - Dollar Bay - Mudchute - Island Gardens. Track attached.

The cross river tunnels: At Woolwich one of each of the lifts (North or South are out of action to discourage users) so I suggest we wait for the free Woolwich Ferry on the outward leg. On the return Northside- Island Gardens, some could take the DLR to Greenwich if the lifts are out.

Route: 17.5 miles 3.5 hour ride with half-hour stop at CD (ride leader Amanda rode the route in just under two hours so that's a guide as to how long it should take). Fairly flat ride, with a few bridges to up and over. "

This series of Saturday morning rides is organised by Bruce Lynn on behalf of Southwark Cyclists, who are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Their website is here https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/. The rides are friendly and free. To join, just turn up. To check details text Bruce on 07729 279 945

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
    • On the plus side showers are warm down - for now 😆
