Architects - are they worth it?

Be grateful to receive any comments/advice regarding employing an architect.

Planning to get a ground floor side and rear extension built but scope is somewhat restricted by rules governing a conservation area and the Dulwich Estate, therefore, was wondering if an architect can really add value or does it make more sense to just get the plans drawn up by a surveyor?

Would be very interested to hear experience of people who have done something similar.

Architects can come up with innovative ideas for how to get what you want whereas a surveyor is generally less 'artistic' - if it were me I would have an Architect.
