free sociable cycle rides Sat June 19th

Recommended Posts

Two short, friendly sociable cycle rides for Saturday June 19th. Each with 13 places with registration on Eventbrite as usual. Note if all places are already booked it is worth checking back as there are usually several cancellations during the week.

You must register on Eventbrite, details below. Please answer the question about start location and please, please give a phone number when registering as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, then cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. Some people have had trouble with cancelling via Eventbrite. It is possible! Just persevere.

Also a Great Trees Ride

A ride to look at some trees. Trees, we are realizing, are not just a taken-for-granted background. They matter. They soak up CO2 and are good for our health. Inspiration comes from a Zoom talk in March to Better Streets Southwark by Paul Wood about Tree Talk and his amazing Tree Map. Route is inspired by Paul?s Great Trees of London Map (?8 from book shops). Start is 10am from the Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge, SE1 2PF. Handy for London Bridge Station if you want to get to the start by train. Then a gentle 10 mile circuit of 5-6 of the Great Trees. Will start with the Tree of Heaven near Tooley St that was planted in memory of Alfred and Ada Salter and continue through Burgess and Southwark Parks, ending up back at London Bridge at 12 noon. Bruce leading.

We will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. The current Covid guidance allows groups of 15 to ride together. Still important that we maintain routinely a 2m social distance, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Just in case we need them, good idea to bring a face mask. Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

Here's some more info about the Trees Ride. Bruce has created a detailed route with information about the six special trees we will see. This could be used to self-ride the route if you cannot get to the ride on Saturday.

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
