Hi there,

My partner and I are thinking about adopting a dog from batteries dogs home. We went to see some today and found a beautiful staffie that we really liked, however, I'm still a bit nervous. I haven't grown up with dogs and am a little unsure around them. My partner is very happy around dogs and insists that I'll become more and more comfortable around them as times goes by.

Are there any staffie owners (preferably women owners) out there who could outline the positives and negatives about owning such a breed?

Thanks for your time,

Emma

I don't own a Staffy but will in the future and I will adopt one. These are marvelous dogs, you need to socialise all breeds at the earliest opportunity, i.e puppy socialisation classes, over the park etc, training classes are brilliant too. There are quite a few Staffs over Peckham Rye park who are very well behaved and socialised, they are great with children, they do like any breed need a couple of walks EVERY day, but that goes without saying, I have always been comfortable with dogs so I don't know how it feels not to be, but if you do get a pup, don't act afraid or be too nervous around it because it will pick that up from you, be confident (this applies to any breed) I reckon you'll fall in love with it in no time :) and be patient, especially with house training etc, they all have to learn, just like we do, good luck, keep us updated x

My husband and I adopted an adult dog a few years back. Like you he had grown up with Dogs whereas I hadn't. Ours turned out to be a lovely dog and I really enjoyed the experience of having a dog. Our dog has now sadly died as he was an old dog.

I haven't had a staffie but generally all the staffies I met whilst out dog walking were lovely dogs. I know this isn't always the case but we always had good experiences and didn't seem to come across the less lovely ones!

    • Please be aware that there is a huge sheet of ice approx 12ft x 6ft on the road at the top end of Avondale Rise on the left hand side approaching Ivanhoe Road.  The council was told earlier this morning, but advised that, due to a reduced service, it is unlikely that grit /salt will be spread before Monday!  Several (thankfully minor) accidents have happened since this morning.  A resident has thoughtfully erected a temporary sign to advise traffic of the hazard, but bearing in mind that temperatures are due to fall to -4 over the weekend and this is on a bus route, please be very careful if driving on this road.
