Disco's roots were also very much in the underground gay club scene...

Started going to Crackers late 73, some of the things described I remember well, great club but I preferred Global Village in the arches off Viiliers St and Cheeky Pete's in Richmond.

I went to the Royalty once and also to the Royal in Tottenham ( I think), the goldmine I went to a few times but in the early 70's the Lyceum on a Monday night was were I went along with a group of friends also used to frequent the Sloop John D, a club on a boat on the Thames moored between Chelsea and Albert bridge, it could only be reached by a little ferry that ran back and forth at the weekend. It had an American DJ, who played all the latest imports. Can't for the life of me remember the blokes name but his choice of music was second to none. Other clubs I recall are Hatchetts, and the Sundown in Tottenham Court Road. Early 80's was Beat Route, and the Embassy stopped clubbing shortly after the demise of that place.

Early 80s - Loved the Beat Route, the Embassy (Baker Street?) I think I went to, Camden Palace when it first opened, Barracuda, there was another place in Ken High Street but the name escapes me, later the Wag but was all getting a bit elitist/zoot suity 80s for me so started going to Wendy May's Locomotion at Kentish Town. Acid House refreshed clubbing for me though.

    • Not only can he turn olive oil into Vermouth, but also water into a wine. A true miracle worker.  I wouldn't say a wine shop sells a wide variety of things - and there are two right next to each other.  And once upon a time, upmarket pizza shops were very specific. So were burritos etc. They're clearly becoming mainstream; we should consider ourselves lucky to be witnessing this exciting upward trend within our lifetimes and on OUR HIGH STREET. We can tell our grandkids that we remember when there was no internet and no empanadas.  I'm sure that if the family empanada people have a good business head, they'll be able to ride this wave of competition, just like Bruno has.
    • Very economical. Are you available for events? I've got a gathering of 5000 coming up soon. What could you knock up with two little fishes and five loaves of bread? Cod in breadcrumbs? Fish finger sandwiches? Spanish-style croquetas de bacalao with a Romesco sauce? It's BYOB for beer, so there's no need to worry about that and I've managed to do an unbelievable deal on water and wine. Drop me a DM on here or ask for Dave or Jesus (pronounced 'Hay-Zooze') in The Herne, left hand side of the bar.
