free social cycle rides Saturday July 17th: still places left

Recommended Posts

The footie turned out disappointing but there is always next time. Now we can focus on the Tour de France. Can Mark Cavendish make it over the remaining hills, get to Paris next Sunday, win on the Champs Elysee and take the Green Jersey? Pretty much a certainty.........

Before then the small matter of the Saturday 17th rides. Note - very nice weather forecast for the 17th.

This week we have 2 Southwark Healthy Rides, one from Cutty Sark starting at 9.30am and the other from Dulwich Park starting at 10am. Already notified and posted but places available on both. Registration on Eventbrite as usual. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling.

Ride details

Greenwich to Lesnes Abbey

9.30 am to 1.00 pm. Start/finish Cutty Sark. Note the slightly earlier 9.30 start. 20 mile route largely follows the river, keeping to the south side. Outward takes the Thames path round the Greenwich peninsula and continuing to Woolwich and Thamesmead. Heads inland on mostly paths to Lesnes Abbey and a well-deserved coffee break. On the return use the 3 mile linear, elevated, Ridgeway path to Woolwich, then Thames path again until the Ecology Park at N Greenwich. Cut across the peninsula to save your legs and finish along a short stretch of Thames path to Cutty Sark. High proportion of this route is on off-road paths. Done this route at least twice in recent years.

Reports of previous rides: http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-august_sept-2017.html and https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/38-riders-a-healthy-ride-record/. Our most popular ride ever was the 2019 ride with 38 riders! Loads to see, including riding past the O2, Thames Barrier and the steel men (?Assembly? by Peter Burke) at Woolwich Arsenal. Amanda leading. Route attached.

Dulwich to Wimbledon Park

Our parks and commons are at their best at the moment so come and enjoy a ride through 5 of them. 15 miles. 10am ?12.30pm. Start/finish Dulwich Clock Caf?, Dulwich Park SE21 7BQ. Route: Dulwich Park via Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common to Wimbledon Park. Return same route. Mostly quiet streets, occasional busy junction, lots of easily cycled paths in the parks and on the commons. Coffee stop in Wimbledon Park. Jean leading. We did this ride in April, route at https://strava.app.link/G7flaOBkHfb. Grab the sun cream and some water - the forecast for tomorrow's rides is sunny and gentle breeze, perfect.

Still several places on the 10am Dulwich ride ( https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-wimbledon-park-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-162346545889) and just one place for the 9.30 Lesnes Abbey ride ( https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-lesnes-abbey-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-162351145647).

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
