sociable cycle ride Sat August 7th

Recommended Posts

August is here already. So time to clock up a few more healthy miles. By the way, if anyone from the Parliament Hill ride last week has photos would love to see them. Easiest way is to post to the Southwark Cyclists Healthy rides Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/553896211918871).

This week we have two Southwark Healthy Rides with registration on Eventbrite as usual. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling.

Peckham to Shooters Hill

Typical easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride. Aim is to get to Severndroog Castle on top of Shooters Hill. Start time 9.30 (note earlier than usual time). Start Peckham Square (Peckham library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). Duration 3.5 hours including refreshment break at the Castle. Outward route uses bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge. Then off road and quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. Brief stop in Well Hall Pleasaunce to prepare for the summit ascent. Next a short ride to the southwest corner of Jack Wood and the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. Plenty of time to just walk up - really steep section only 300m long. Usually there is a small caf? operating at the Castle, but may be best to bring own refreshments. Fast return route using initially busy Shooters Hill Road, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park. Whiz down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Q1 to Surrey Canal Rd, Bridgehouse Meadows and quiet streets back to Peckham Square. Bruce leading, route at https://bit.ly/2Fv5z5Z . Previously did this ride Jan 19th 2019. Report and photos at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-jan-march2019.html

Canada Water to St James Park

Our sightseeing ride, led by Tour Guide Simon! Start time 10am. Start/finish in Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water station, SE16 7AR. Easy, 10 mile, 2 hour, flat ride from Canada Water. Route goes across London Bridge and passes Parliament Square, St James Park, Buckingham Palace and starts back across Westminster Bridge. Outward using much of Cycleway 3 along the Embankment. Return keeping to the south side of the river. Along Lower Marsh, The Cut, then mostly C14 - Union Street, Newcomen St, Weston St, Leathermarket St, Tanner St, Tooley St, Dockhead, ending with Thames path route back to CW. Although we are on some busy roads, mostly have a cycle lane or bus lane.

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/ and the LCC website is here: https://www.lcc.org.uk/. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. • Hello:  Can anyone recommend a football club where girls age 7 years old can play?   Ideally in SE21 / SE22.  Thanks,
    • That's not what I said and you know it.
    • I disagree, it was pretty filthy back then, plus the issues that Southwark have had were the ones left by EA.
    • I've been cycling in London for decades. The two times a vehicle knocked me off my bicycle, were in conditions that were well lit (one was daylight) and the night time one was just me and the vehicle on the road. Both the driver's fault. The point it that most drivers are perfectly capable of seeing a bicycle in most conditions, just as they are capable of seeing a child or dog run out in front of them. Who knows why a small percentage are incapable of doing that, but gaslighting the victim is not the answer. Are there wreckless cyclists? Sure. Just as there are reckless drivers and pedestrians. But it's worth remembering that millions of roads users navigate their journeys perfectly safely every day. As a driver, you are taught to check your mirrors regularly (not just when considering an manoevre), and the first rule of the Highway Code, is to always avoid an accident if you can. My attitude when using the roads it to always expect someone to do something stupid/ wreckless. I look for it. That is the best way of avoiding any accident, no matter what form of transport you use.
