free sociable cycle ride Sat August 14th

Recommended Posts

Well, Saturday 7th was WET. But forecast for 14th is EXCELLENT. This week we have one Southwark Healthy Ride with registration on Eventbrite as usual. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling.

Greenwich to Victoria Park

Typical easy-paced ride. Amanda leading a cross river ride including a trip on the Emirates Airline. Note early 9.30 start. Start location: Greenwich Station. Meet at main entrance on Greenwich High Road, near the Novotel (not DLR station entrance or on platform). OR meet at tunnel exit at Island Gardens at 9.45 (for people happy to carry bikes down/up steps at Greenwich Foot Tunnel, or who can ride directly to Island Gardens). Please indicate on the registration form if you plan to join at Island Gardens. Ride duration 3 to 3.5 hours including refreshment break. To begin we will take the DLR to Mudchute (bring face mask and travel pass or equivalent). Then Thames Path to Limehouse and along the canal towpath to Mile End Park (beautiful at present). Continue on towpath to Victoria Park and do a circuit of the park. Head east to loop through QE Park. Will have a coffee stop at The Beast Barge on entry to QE Park. Return will follow Lee Navigation to Three Mills then the Cody Dock route to Canning Town and on to the west end of the Royal Victoria Dock. Next board the Emirates Airline cable car (surprisingly easy to get a bike on this) to the O2.

Finally cut across the Greenwich Peninsula and pick up the Thames path to finish at Cutty Sark.

Ride reports. We usually do a short report with some route details for each ride. Put this on the SC web site ( https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2021/) and often also on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/553896211918871). Read about our experience last Saturday in the monsoon!

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] and the LCC website is here: [www.lcc.org.uk]. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. For more info text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or DM me

the Victoria Park ride is nearly full. We also like to have an easy ride for less confident cyclists. So Bruce will be leading his Tour de Rotherhithe ride this Saturday. NOTE- you must book on Eventbrite using the link below.

Tour de Rotherhithe

Rotherhithe has a remarkable history. This ride takes you on a tour of interesting sites. And because of the excellent planning from the late 1980s there are lots of pedestrian/cycle paths and this ride is nearly completely off-road. A great ride for someone relatively new to cycling. Start/finish point will be Deal Porter Square, opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. Start time 10am and finish 12 noon. Route is: Southwark Park, King Stairs Gardens, then Thames path all the way to Deptford Historic Riverside. Along this stretch will pass the departure point of the Mayflower, the first underwater tunnel anywhere (by Brunel) and the Surrey Docks Farm. From Deptford will head back via the Surrey Canal Linear Park to South Dock, Greenland Dock and Russia Woodland. Final stop at Stave Hill to admire the view then loop past surrey Water and along the canal to Canada Water. All this in 10 miles and as a final bonus ? this route is entirely without hills! Report and photos from previous ride in 2019: http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-april-may2019.html. Annotated route map at https://goo.gl/5pFd9b.

    • Callout for help from any local experts here. Looking to find out more about the history of the property on the corner of Whateley Road and Ulverscroft road (with the green glazed bricks). Now a residential property, i'm told it was a bottle shop in days gone (the house was built around 1900) by and i'd like to learn more about the history of the business that was once here - name, photos, anything at all really! Seems to be very little from open source research so i'm hoping anyone with history in the area can provide any insight!  Starting here before i contact Southwark Archives or similar orgs to get any information and pictures (any advice here also would be welcome). Thank you
    • Portable ramps are available for businesses to use in this sort of situation, aren't they? I don't know whether one would be suitable for use here, or whether they have the space to store one. Lots of people have  permanent or temporary disabilities which mean they have to use crutches or a wheelchair.
    • I can’t remember where I read that figure but this article in the Grauniad from 2023 discusses Ocado results from 2022. The average shopping cart fell to £118 from £129 the previous year. But Ocado lost £500m that year on approximately 20 million orders (circa 400k orders per week). So, averaging out to £25 lost per order. Ocado pauses building new warehouses as annual losses balloon to £500m | Ocado | The Guardian  Obviously, the £500m loss includes various factors. But Ocado has existed for 25 years and only made a small profit in a couple of those years. The rest have been huge losses. Yet it continues to raise funds and speculation sends the share price up and down. In that respect,  it’s like the UK version of Tesla. Meanwhile, the main growth in the supermarket sector has been for Aldi and Lidl, who do not deliver.
