Tree Removal

Sadly, no experience of Southwark Council (and by my Southwark Council experience, I would expect the process to be at least 3.7million times more painful). But... it took two years to get a tree removed from outside my property as the roots were pushing the garden wall over and the leaf-fall in autumn was phenomenal. Our council had separate a separate tree committee (deciding whether a tree had preserved status or not) and shade committee (deciding whether the shade from a tree was a nuisance or not). Each committee only met once every six months and the case was bounced between the committees several times. Eventually the tree was removed, and the document that clinched it was a google earth satellite image, showing that you couldn't see the garden due to the tree overhang. Probably worth getting some pics from Google, Microsoft Bing and Apple, etc., so you can show the tree problem at different times of year.

Re getting some progress / acknowledgement from the council, have a word with your local Councillor - they are usually mentioned in the top couple of pages of the ED issues section. Ask them to find out what progress has been made. Although if you're the Rye Lane ward you haven't got a hope (useless).

    • A couple of updates to this terrible event:   1) In 2021, two cousins (one from Penge and one from Streatham) were convicted of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison. The Southwark News has a summary of the awful day. https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/dulwich/donnell-rhule-dulwich-knife-murderer-cousins-sentenced-to-life-for-killing-18-year-old/    2) Last week, a female prison officer from Forest Hill was sentenced to eight months in prison for pursuing a relationship with one of the two murderers while at HMP Brixton. https://metro.co.uk/2025/12/15/probation-officer-admits-relationship-prisoner-hmp-belmarsh-25501445/ https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/38203627/probation-officer-jailed-illicit-relationship-murderer-secure-prison/
    • The Commons Public Accounts Committee questioned both the CEO and MD of Capita yesterday, at their last meeting before the recess:  https://committees.parliament.uk/event/25889/formal-meeting-oral-evidence-session/.  In October they'd already expressed concern that Capita might not  be able to efficiently retake over responsibility for the administration within the timescale. Given the joint statement recently issued by Capita and the Cabinet Office I'm not sure that contacting an MP is going to add much, other than venting what I think most of us can probably appreciate of what those affected are likely  to be thinking and feeling; unless perhaps, and I hope it's not needed, to report on deficiencies in the immediate rescue actions.
    • She's responded, but I'm sure I read something in the Guardian consumer advice column. Might be some pointers if you're stuck
    • Two for Ratcliffe, the obvious one:   And one simply because it has the word  "You are nothing but blind fascists" in it.  Oh and a good song too.   Haven't listened to this for years.  Bloody good!
