It's very confusing for us blokes Sue.

Years ago I worked with a married lady who wanted to be called Miss as she wasn't a "man's appendage" so Mrs upset her.

However getting rid of Miss will ruin the opening lines of the Dead Parrot Sketch

"Excuse me Miss"

Gruff voice "what do you mean Miss?"

"I'm sorry, I have a cold"

Ms does not necessarily denote marital status. Some married women use it with a surname that maybe is their married name but not necessarily.
