Grab.

I'm showing my age, but it always used to be a greedy sort of thing to do, grabbing.

If not  outright criminal, as in snatch and grab.

Now it seems to be  used for getting anything. Let's grab a sandwich. Up for grabs. I'll just come and grab that now.

I hate it!

And "It is what it is".

Yes, obviously it is, otherwise it would be something else 🙄

Thank you SO much

Notice this more now you come to mention it. People saying "thank you SO much" sounds so cringy when leaving the cashier, where a simple "thank you" would suffice.

What was your name?

I'm not in the habit of changing my name FFS.

Playing slight devil's advocate - I interpret it as shorthand for "What was the name you wrote" (or whatever)

My objection is that it is an Americanism.

Spoken id prefer Mon to Thurs. In writing Mon - Thurs.

Yes but the point of saying "through" or "thru" is that it unambiguously includes Friday!!!

"Monday to Friday" might or might not include Friday.

"Monday through Friday" very clearly does include Friday.

Nothing wrong with a useful expression that just happens to come from America, surely? Much of our modern language does originally, just as much of their language came from us originally.

Times change, and all that ....

    • DKH was two form entry, it is now one form entry to cope with the fact it was far more under subscribed than other schools in the area. They had actually combined year groups into single classes, 3/4 and 5/6.  When a school changes name, it’s usually because of a bad reputation perhaps the results.  The new name is dry with no history unlike its current name. It’s a very sketchy decision. It’s an expensive vanity project for someone.  What  will happen if the name change does not increase applications to the school?
    • @first mate I assume Alice made a mistake, as she removed her reaction.  I was wondering about park wardens. As I said, there was one there last night, who was incredibly helpful and proactive. As well as bringing me to the police, he caught up with a young guy on a bike who'd earlier been the victim of an attempted theft by these kids and linked him up with the police too. But I do wonder, as I've only very occasionally seen him riding around, how many they have and what hours they patrol. I've no doubt they'd be a strong deterrent if they had a better presence. They were nowhere to be seen the first time around.  Update: I've just found this: https://services.southwark.gov.uk/community-safety/community-wardens The guy in the photo at the bottom of the page was the lovely warden of last night and I've just now remembered him telling me he's based in Burgess Park. Anyway, there needs to be more of them, as I rarely see one in Peckham.
