This week (Sept 4th) we have one Southwark Healthy Ride planned. We hope to be able to offer a second short ride later. Registration on Eventbrite as usual. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Dulwich to Morden Hall Park

A new challenge for Healthy Riders, heading further into southwest London than ever before. Start 9.30 (NOTE earlier time), Dulwich Clock Caf?, Dulwich Park, SE21 7BQ. Back at Dulwich Park for 1pm. Outward route via Brockwell Park, Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common to Earlsfield (mostly LCN25). Join the Wandle Trail and follow this largely off-road route to Morden Hall Park. This is National Trust, but the grounds and, importantly, the Tea Room or open to the public. Coffee break there. Return route follows Wandle trail back to Colliers Wood, then takes the more direct Cycleway 7 along the A24. Not so scenic, but cycle lanes and other protection have been improved in recent years. At Clapham Common rejoin the outward route (LCN25) back to Dulwich Park via Herne Hill. About 18 miles, some hills, nothing severe. Jean and John leading. Route at https://www.strava.com/activities/5690167719.

We will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Even with the relaxation of the rules it is still a good idea to routinely keep a 2m social distance, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Bring a face mask as it may be useful, for example to get refreshments at a caf? stop. Please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] and the LCC website is here: [www.lcc.org.uk]. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. For more info text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or DM me

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
