This week we have two Southwark Healthy Rides planned. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Peckham to Shooters Hill

There's an early start for this typical easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride. Aim is to get to Severndroog Castle on top of Shooters Hill. Start time 9.30 (note earlier than usual time). Start Peckham Square (Peckham library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). Duration 3.5 hours including refreshment break at the Castle. Outward route uses bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge. Then off road and quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. Brief stop in Well Hall Pleasaunce to prepare for the summit ascent. Next a short ride to the southwest corner of Jack Wood and the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. Plenty of time to just walk up - really steep section only 300m long. Usually there is a small caf? operating at the Castle, but may be best to bring own refreshments. Fast return route using initially busy Shooters Hill Road, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park. Whiz down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Q1 to Surrey Canal Rd, Bridgehouse Meadows and quiet streets back to Peckham Square. Bruce leading, route at https://bit.ly/2Fv5z5Z .

The second ride is the Four Bridges Ride starting at 10am from Canada Water to Tate Modern and St Pauls.

It's flat 2 hour, 10 mile ride, so pretty easy-paced. Mostly cycle lane or quiet streets. Start/finish Deal Porter Square next to Canada Water Library and opposite Canada Water Station, SE16 7AR. 10am to 12 noon. Leader Philippa. Start along the Thames Path, then north over Tower Bridge and along Cycleway C3 to Southwark Bridge. South over the bridge and turn right onto Sumner St to the Tate. Cross Millennium Bridge on foot ? required ? to St Pauls. Then backstreet route to Blackfriars bridge crossing south onto C6 and back to Canada Water via Q1 (now Cycleway 10). Route at http://bit.ly/39F1pET.

We will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Even with the relaxation of the rules it is still a good idea to routinely keep a 2m social distance, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Bring a face mask as it may be useful, for example to get refreshments at a caf? stop. Obviously please do not turn up to this event if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] and the LCC website is here: [www.lcc.org.uk]. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
    • On the plus side showers are warm down - for now 😆
