Saturday Sept 18th, 12.30, Southwark Park. Pictures and map attached.

This is an opportunity for us all to meet face-to-face after all that zooming! Everyone welcome.

We will meet in Southwark Park, next to the bandstand and hope for decent weather.

Can everyone bring their own food and drink, and maybe a bit extra for sharing. Please bring your friends and family and let's all be ready to participate in a few silly competitions (who is the slowest cyclist in Southwark!?)

Get this date in your diary: Sat Sept 18th, 12.30, Southwark Park.

Any questions text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or DM me. I won't know but I should be able to find out

Also these rides, starting 9.30am

This week we have two Southwark Healthy Rides planned. Remember you must register on Eventbrite, link details below. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Canada Water to the Mound

Start/finish Canada Water (Deal Porter Square, opposite CW Station, SE16 7AR). Start 9.30 ( NOTE earlier time than usual ), aim to finish 12.30 to 1pm (so just right for joining SC Picnic, see above).

We have all seen the pictures and the media ridicule. But is the Mound really that silly ? or is it just reporters being horrid to Westminster Council (unlikely?). Here is your chance to decide for yourself. The Mound is free at the moment. Ride Leader Philippa did this ride with another group ? see photos at https://www.facebook.com/philippa.goffe. So come and join one of our usual easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Rides. Route will be CW to London Bridge, LB to Cannon Street, St Paul's, down to Embankment Cycleway, Parliament Square, Constitution Hill (Green Park), Hyde Park to the Mound. Back via Westminster Bridge and Waterloo onto Thames path (NCN 4) then back via Cycleway 14 to Canada Water.

Greenwich to Royal Docks.

Flat 3 hour, 13 mile ride so pretty easy-paced. Lots of Thameside and dock-side path or quiet streets. Start 9.30 ( Note early 9.30 start), aim to finish 12.30 to 1pm at Cutty Sark (so just right for joining SC Picnic, see above) . Start location: Greenwich Station. Meet at main entrance on Greenwich High Road, near the Novotel (not DLR station entrance or on platform). OR meet at tunnel exit at Island Gardens at 9.45 (for people happy to carry bikes down/up steps at Greenwich Foot Tunnel, or who can ride directly to Island Gardens). Please indicate on the registration form if you plan to join at Island Gardens. Leader Jamie.

Route. To begin we will take the DLR to Mudchute (bring face mask and travel pass or equivalent). Then east side of Isle of Dogs to Blackwall, East India Dock Basin, Lee flyover cycle path, Royal Victoria Dock, Excel Centre, Royal Albert Dock, London City Airport. Start return over Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge, then across Woolwich Ferry (or if just miss one via Foot Tunnel). Back via Thames Path (NCN 4) past Flood Barrier and O2. Most of route will be same as on previous Thames Lovers ride, map at http://tiny.cc/6fabdz. As Jaime said in his report from that ride, ?There cannot be many healthy activities more enjoyable than a cycle along a warm and sunny London river path with good company.? Fingers crossed we get the warm and sunny again!

These rides (and the picnic) are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] and the LCC website is here: [www.lcc.org.uk]. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. For more info text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or DM me. I won't know but I should be able to find out.

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
    • On the plus side showers are warm down - for now 😆
