Rides for 25th Sept

For Sat 25th Sept we have two Healthy Rides planned. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Parks in Kennington, Lambeth and Camberwell 9 mile circuit from Peckham taking in a number of mostly small parks. Lots to see, lots of history including a miniature village, a WW2 tragedy and a pleasure garden. Bruce leading. Start/finish Peckham Square next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY. Start 10am, approx. 2 hour duration. Easy flat ride, mostly paths and quiet streets. Everyone welcome. Route at https://bit.ly/2XmGYLS

Greenwich to Olympic Park. Flat 15 mile circuit with a cable car ride to make it interesting. 10am ? 1.30pm. Start at Cutty Sark, next to the Foot Tunnel, SE10 9HT. Out along Thames Path past the O2 and on to the Emirates Airline. Remember to bring face mask and travel pass or card (passengers pay, bikes go free). Surprisingly easy to put a bike on the cable car. North to the Greenway and the Olympic Park. Circuit of the Park then exit to a coffee Stop at the ViewTube. Follow the Lee Valley route past Three Mills and probably looking in on Cody Dock. More Lee Path then through the Isle of Dogs. Finish at Mudchute DLR as Foot Tunnel currently has no lifts working. Riders who wish to cross back to Greenwich can use the DLR (step free at Mudchute) to Greenwich Station (also step free) or go on to Island Gardens and carry bikes up and down the stairs at the Foot Tunnel. Philippa leading. L ast ridden June 26th, report and photos here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2021/healthy-rides-26th-june-2021/.

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] and the LCC website is here: [www.lcc.org.uk]. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. For more info text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or DM me. I won't know but I should be able to find out.

We have some places free for the short ride, going to visit parks in Kennington, Vauxhall and Camberwell. Start 10 am Peckham Square, finish 12 back in the square.

Checked the route earlier as first time we have done it. Even though say it myself, it works well. Flat and plenty of interest.

The little houses on Vauxhall Park are looking smart. Cannot make my mind up about the new Eythorne Park (Myatts Field North).

Forecast good - mild, dry, cloudy. If you are pushed, no need to register ( https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/parks-in-kennington-lambeth-and-camberwell-cycle-ride-tickets-172255319297), will be OK to just turn up for this one.

    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).

    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
