7+ Autumn Half Term Intensive

The course covers all subjects and takes place on 25th-29th October, 2021, 9am-3pm. Cost: ?650. The 7+ intensive course is aimed at children in year 2 taking 7+ exams from November-January. This is my favourite course as the children love it so much even through it is a 7+ revision course! We cover key topics in English comprehension, writing, maths, verbal and non verbal reasoning, with games, paired and group working and competitions throughout the week to break up the lessons, and they do some sample tests on Friday which we give you and their one to one tutors feedback on so that you can focus in on areas for improvement in the final weeks before the assessments. Everything tends to come together in the October half term and final half term before Christmas for our year 2 students, as they have been diligently learning all the foundations in the run up to this point in time.

7+ Mock Exam Morning

Sunday 7th November, 2021 runs from approx 9am-1pm. Cost: ?150. This is an opportunity for your child to understand what it feels like to sit all tests in a morning as they will do on an actual assessment morning. This can be an invaluable experience as it can raise/bring to light things such as nerves, concentration, ability to refocus, all sorts of exam technique points that whilst addressed earlier during one to one tuition, often only become "real" for a student when they experience an assessment morning. I have seen students benefit by getting their nerves out of the way and feel more prepared for what to expect, learn for example that if they get stuck on a question that doesn't mean they need to go to the toilet 5 times during that paper (!), the importance of not missing out any pages in their test, showing their working etc. We write feedback for you on their results so that you and their tutor can hone in on these things before the actual assessments.

7+ Christmas Creative Writing Workshop

The 7+ Christmas Creative Writing Workshop runs from 20th-21st December, 2021, 9am-3pm. Cost: ?250. Similar to the Summer 7+ Creative Writing, this course is aimed at helping children who will be sitting the 7+, but for children who are working more at NC levels and are going into year 3 it is also a very good fit, as 7+ students are working far ahead of NC levels for their age. We look at sentence structure, adding detail and description with adjectives, adverbs, fun and exciting verbs, openers and the 5 senses, as well as similes. We work on story mountains/volcanoes and how to write a 3-5 paragraph story with a clear progression and resolution.

11+ Autumn Half Term Creative Writing

This workshop runs from 23rd-24th October, 2021, 9am-3.30pm. Cost: ?250. This 2 day half term Creative Writing course for years 4-6 follows a similar format to the Summer one mentioned at the top, with a focus on 11+ writing styles.

11+ Mock Exam Morning

Sunday 30th October, 2020 from approx 9am-1.35pm. Cost: ?150. This is an opportunity for your child to experience what it feels like to sit a full assessment morning before their independent school exams in January. They will sit a full English and maths test, and slightly abbreviated verbal and non verbal in order to make the day not too gruelling! For many students this is an invaluable experience as it gives them a less intimidating yet real opportunity to show themselves that they can complete these exams back to back and often that it isn't as scary as it might seem! They often report that it allowed them to get their nerves out of the way, and they could see how quickly they were going to need to work and also find out where they still needed to improve. We write feedback for you on their results so that you and their tutor can hone in on final areas for improvement before the January assessments.

    • Here is another article from the excellent Special Needs Jungle (SNJ) with tips for responses to the SEND conversation survey. Including shoe horning in EHCPs which they "forget" to ask a question about in the conversation. And living as we do in Southwark with the huge misfortune of 100% academy secondary schools, some thoughts on this and how unlikely inclusion in mainstream is within the current education landscape. Closing date 14 Jan 2026. And please consider a donation to the excellent entirely run by volunteers SNJ. In my view the government could save money by creating some smaller mainstream secondary schools for kids who can cope in primary school but not  with the scale of secondary, and need a calmer less busy setting. The funding would have to be different - it is currently on a per pupil basis which favours larger schools. But it would undoubtedly be cheaper than specialist provision, and the huge cost to individual children and families (emotional and financial) and to society. https://www.specialneedsjungle.com/tips-help-complete-governments-send-conversation-survey-law/ If anyone wants to take a radical step to help their struggling child, my tip is to move far away: these are the best two schools I have ever visited and in a beautiful part of the country. I only wish we'd moved there before it was too late for my son who had to suffer multiple failings at Charter North and then at the hands of Southwark SEND, out of education from February to October in year 10-11, having already suffered the enduring trauma of a very difficult early life, which in combination with ADHD made his time at schools which just don't care so very unbearable for all of us. https://www.cartmelprioryschool.co.uk/ https://settlebeck.org/ As an add on, I would say to anybody considering adoption, please take into account the education battles that you are very much more likely to face than the average parent. First you have schools to deal with, already terrible; then being passed from pillar to post within Southwark Education, SEND, Education Inclusion Team, round and round as they all do their best to explain why they are not responsible and you need someone different, let's hold another multi-agency meeting, never for one minute considering that if they put the child at the centre and used common sense they would achieve a lot more in much less time without loads of Southwark employees sitting in endless meetings with long suffering parents. It is hard to fully imagine this at the start of your adoption journey, full of hope as you are, but truly education is not for the faint hearted, and should be factored into your decision. You'll never hear from people who are really struggling and continue to do so, only from those who've had challenges but overcome them and it's all lovely. And education, the very people who should be there to help, are the ones who make your lives the most hellish out of everything your child and you face.
    • It’s a big problem all over London. I’ve seen it happen in Kennington and Bloomsbury in the last year. I think there has been some progress recently with some key arrests, but you do need to be very careful when walking around with your phone out, especially, as you say, if wearing noise cancelling headphones. Sorry you experienced this
