It is mostly removed manually at the first stage of sorting at the recycling centre.

Although judging by the air of boredom surrounding the guys doing it when I visited on an open day, I'm not sure how thoroughly.

And that was on a day when "the public" were watching!

The OP is querying what happens to recyclable items which are put in with the general waste instead of into the recycling bins. So the question is - does Veolia go through the general waste to extract recyclable items.

Having visited Southwark's recycling centre I say the answer is "NO".

Veolia staff sort the recycling by hand to try to remove items which shouldn't have been put in with the recycling and the recycling is automatically sorted into different categories, but they do NOT sort the general waste. All the general waste is bagged up, left to dry and then sent for incineration or landfill.

    • Ah, thanks,  it all comes flooding back. I've actually been to the Hastings shop, I'd forgotten all about it, along with her name! Didn't she (in between?)  take over what  was then The Magnolia, previously The Magdala, now The Lordship, with her then partner? Or is that some figment of my imagination?  In fact, didn't they transform it from The Magdala (much missed) to The Magnolia? With flowery wallpaper covering the front of the bar? Which reminds me of the pub's brief period after The Magnolia  as the ill-conceived and ill-fated The Patch.

    • A belated recommendation for Iain and Paul od Oddbods who came to help me with various jobs before Christmas.  Painting ceiling, renewing silicone around bath, repairing a window sill which was almost beyond repair and hanging a large mirror.   Very happy with their work and they are friendly and very reliable and excellent at communicating.  No hesitation in recommending them.
