My kids are wanting to start arranging a family get together to celebrate a 70th birthday in March and Ruby Wedding in June. We have floated the idea of having a joint celebration around April/May. Looking for ideas.

Family is wide spread - one daughter and family in Harlow (no car) Ages ranging from 11- 45.

One daughter in Orpington - (car) 'children' 18 and 23.

Daughter Durrington West Sussex children 6 and 8. (car)

Could be around 20 of us (maximum) if all the grandchildren and great grandchildren come.

We are happy to pay cost of overnight stay at a moderately priced hotel if necessary. Ideas for venues which could provide meals for a wide age range. Preferably out of London but with good transport links for non car drivers. Would need to be a weekend, weekend self catering cottage etc with at least 7 bedrooms - near a good restaurant could be considered.

Daughter says venues for next March are being booked up now so we need to get sorted before Xmas. Any ideas/suggestions please.

Can recommend the Olde Bell in Hurley

Great pub, with great food...but is a bit more than a posh pub as has extensive gardens, a number of different private annexes (i.e. like a barn) for pvt events too. Younger kids can run around in gardens and explore the various nooks and crannies, and also, whole family can enjoy a pre-or post lunch walk along the Thames into Marlow fairly easily

Accommodation ranges from fancy large rooms in the original pub building to more functional rooms in a new annexe across the road. Not sure how pricey they are these days as been a couple of years since we went.

Plenty of car parking, but those without a car might need a cab from Marlow or Maidenhead stations.

The Old Bell looks good but unfortunately being off the M4 it would be a difficult journey by car for most of us. I used to work in Maidenhead many years ago and commuted to East Dulwich every weekend by car.

Would consider Kent/parts of Surrey/ Sussex

    • Not sure what you mean by "involved with firework enjoyment"? I'm all for others enjoying themselves, and I like fireworks, but if they were limited to public displays then people could still enjoy them? Having said that, I see that tickets for the London New Year fireworks start at £20 (Dawson's Heights it is,  then!) The fireworks in Brockwell Park used to be free. I don't know why those don't happen any more?
    • Really interesting discussion here. It's difficult to respect the views of people who support Farage, Trump, Musk etc. Why should we, when their views are deplorable. But then that exact 'deplorable' label, as we know, is counterproductive and drives people to double down / switch off to more progressive views. How do you actually help change minds? We're currently spiralling into dark places culturally and politically imo. The amount of open racism, even amongst front line politicians here and in the US is astounding to me. Feels like we're going backwards. The influence of social media and the tech billionaires / bros, is a powerful and largely malignant one. There was an enlightening (and frightening) bit of journalism by Sky this week about Musk's influence on British politics. He has a strange obsession with the UK and London in particular (as do many on the US right wing): https://news.sky.com/story/the-x-effect-how-elon-musk-is-boosting-the-british-right-13464487
    • Looking for any tickets to the Dulwich Hamlets game against St Albans today!
    • I'm going to Paris with friends, staying in the 3rd arrondissement. I used to go a lot but that was ages ago so wondered if anyone has any 'insider tips'? We are interested in small art galleries, independent shops, good value cafes and restaurants that may not feature in all the many online articles or guides, thanks!
