Rides for 23rd October

NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.

For Sat 23rd Oct there will be two Southwark Healthy Rides, one 2 hour, one 3 hour. When you register on Eventbrite, link details below, please give a phone number as it may be needed for Track and Trace. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge

A flat route from Dulwich ? yes indeed. Starting from Dulwich Park Caf?, quiet streets to Brockwell Park, exit on to Brixton Water Lane, then take Effra Road to Brixton Central. Road takes its name from the River Effra whose valley we will follow. R. Effra not visible as it was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s. Long run down Brixton Rd to the Oval, bit boring but gets you there. On to CS5 at the Oval and followed this short segregated path to Vauxhall Bridge. You used to be able to see the exit of the Effra into the Thames just upstream, but the Tideway Tunnel people have built lots of stuff concealing this. Apparently it is not where the Effra mostly entered the Thames anyway - find out more here http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/.

Short stop on Vauxhall Bridge then if time a circuit of the new American embassy with its moat and defensive rampart and a look at the Sky Pool. Back to CS5 and into Kennington Park, followed by back streets to Myatts Fields. Then Elim Open Space, across Coldharbour Lane at Cambria Rd, and along Milkwood road to Herne Hill. Finally Burbage Rd, past the Velodrome (maybe pop in if we have time) to Dulwich Village and the Park. Overall a mixture of quiet and busy streets, some cycle lane. Care needed at Brixton central, but we have done this ride several times without problems. Bruce leading. Route at

Peckham to Victoria Park.

Flat 18 mile ride. Start/finish in Peckham Square , next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. 10am start, aiming for 1pm finish. From Peckham Square take Canal path then quiet streets to short stretch of Cycleway10 (Q1). Probably Bermondsey St to Tooley St to Tower Bridge. Cycleway 3 (CS3) to Limehouse, then Regents Canal towpath to Mile End Park & Victoria Park. Pretty much the same route for the return. About 18 miles. Possible (probable?) coffee break in Victoria Park. Care needed on towpath ? narrow in places and can be busy. Will use parallel paths in Mile End Park. Jean leading.

These rides are arranged and led by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. Our website is here: [southwarkcyclists.org.uk] and the LCC website is here: [www.lcc.org.uk]. Like everything we do the rides are free and open to everyone. For more info text Bruce on 07729 279 945 or DM me. I won't know but I should be able to find out.

Plug for the Dulwich to Vauxhall ride tomorrow (Sat 23rd)

On recce today I found that the old path under the railway linking 9 Elms Lane to Wandsworth Road has been re-opened. Clearly to provide de-luxe pedestrian access to the newly opened 9 Elms station on the Northern Line extension. Beautiful job on the hoardings and super-smooth surface. Opens up a better return route past the memorial to the Tradescant family of gardeners and through Myatts Field Common Park.

Thought these new features might spark interest. And the forecast is good. Pictures too big to add to the post. Have to come and see for yourselves

    • Dunstans Road  comes under Dulwich Hill SNT- you can get their details on the Met Police website . I know that the Police are often patrolling Dawson Hights. Please contact them,
    • No one is arguing that people should cycle without lights or reflectors. Obviously they should. It is also a legal requirement. But the colour of someone’s clothing? Is it ok to wear navy? What about green? What shade? At what point should we have ‘no reason for sympathy’ if they’re in a collision? I don’t want people to feel like they need special clothes just to walk or cycle. If you have lights and reflectors and you’re on well lit city streets, there is no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to see you, assuming of course, that they're driving with due care and attention. But yes, if there are lots of people without lights, that should be addressed. I suspect in part, it's the change over in seasons and the fact that people are getting caught out by how early it's getting dark now (obviously no excuse).
    • Found it but cannot contact owner as no email or message on it. e*****@icloud.com   please let me know if you’ve recently lost an Apple Watch SE
    • What a passionate thread this is. I have worked in cycling for years, am a cyclist, a driver, use public transport etc. Driving last night with my two young kids, who also cycle, we made the same observations. It was the kids who first asked me why are most cyclists wearing full black and no lights. We then played a game who can spot all the cyclists, and count those with lights and those without. This teaches them to look out for them but also not to put themselves in a position where we have to strain to find them.
