Are you aware that you can go to any optician, get your prescription, and then shop around for frames from wherever you like?

You don't have to use the same optician as does your eye test for your frames.

I go to the Institute of Optometry at the Elephant for eye tests and contact lens checks, then I shop around for frames and get my multifocal contact lenses online.

They don't have a great selection of frames there but I go there because I trust the people to get the prescription right (it's a teaching institute).

Absolutely Sue, I would rather not have all the hassle of doing so though. My last experience with the Institute, where I did indeed do exactly what you suggest, wasn't great. Perhaps I was unlucky, as previous times had been great, but the last time I was very put off by a pushy patronizing optician.

Agree with the Paine & Hunter recommendation.

I can understand that, but you can ask not to see a particular person, as I did once (though with contact lenses).

    • There was good item on Radio 4’s consumer affairs programme You &Yours on 1st December. It was about these CIC fund raising scams and refers to this We R Blighty mob in particular (they have been successfully prosecuted twice and fined for their activities in the City of London). Also mentioned the “knife crime charity” lot who also show up in ED. The advice was to give them nothing and that they are breaking the law. It’s on the BBC Sounds app or via this link  (the item starts at 41m51s in): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n065      I think you know perfectly well that is not what the poster is saying. There are a lot of CICs (there are now 37,000 of them) that have been set up specifically to mislead the public into handing over money. This We R Blighty is one such.
    • Are you saying all CICs are dodgy? I think that’s totally unfair.
    • Similar deal to those Hive City guys who also camp outside of M&S, also a dodgy CIC rather than a charity
    • please report this to the police - were there any witnesses? She should face charges. the owner should not allow dogs off lead - I'm so sorry this has happened.  It would be good if you can identify her - are there cameras - in the cafes around? - follow her, find her address and report her. https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/ac/animal-crime/ also report to the park wardens so they can be found Your Local Council: Contact them to report issues in parks or public areas, especially if you know the dog or owner, as they investigate under local bylaws and the Dangerous Dogs Act. https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/report-a-dog
