I applaud the initiative of Austen Jones to start this petition, it ticks every box about making people feel safer, and it was a serious error of judgement that this proposal was binned for the sake of saving money. When it comes to priorities so often the safety of the public versus 'oh let's install some pavement planters or refurbish our council offices' seems to take a back seat.

Even if you are not a resident of Catford I encourage everyone to sign and share this petition.

Austen Jones: 'Catford continues to be a 'no go zone' tonight.

Your online vote will change this.'

Local resident Austen has been urging Lewisham to replace the footbridge that once connected the former Catford greyhound stadium (now Catford Green) with Doggett Road.

The initial 2017 design proposal for the footbridge was changed to cut costs ? a combination of stairways and lifts was proposed instead of stairs and angled ramps for cyclists and disabled users.

Lewisham council decided in September 2020 to redirect funding secured from the redevelopment of the former greyhound stadium to pedestrian improvements around Catford Bridge Station rather than a promised replacement footbridge.

In a statement the council said a replacement bridge had proved ?unfeasible ?due to the complexities and costs associated with making such a crossing accessible for disabled residents.

Austen insists it is time for the council to consult and involve local people. ?It is now 2022 ? there?s no bridge, no public comment or commitment from the council. And to date not one of our three Rushey Green Ward Councillors has backed a project that would benefit local residents ??

    • Bumpkin I’d say feed and clean.    The RSPB say garden birds are low risk for avian flu but take precautions and clean feeders and birdbaths regularly.    Birds will be starting to nest soon and food you put out can at least feed the parents so they can feed live food to the young who can’t take seed yet.    It’s reccomended to wear gloves and clean feeders/birdbaths with mild disinfectant weekly.
    • We had a take-away from Aroma Lab last night. I was impressed, utterly delicious stir fried tofu and sweet and sour chicken. Generous portions too… will definitely make a habit of eating their home-cooked food.
    • I think that's a big assumption.  Many people vote for the candidate precisely because they are a member of a particular party and represent that party's policiies.  I personally didn't know who McAsh was in the last election, but I knew what party he represented.  When politicians don't act "morally" what are we to think of them and their motivations? But I think there will be people who want to vote Labour, don't know that McAsh has defected and accidentally vote Green precisely because they do vote for the name.  Yes, you could say they need to read the ballot paper more carefully but it's possible to see one thing and not notice another.
