I know three Russians, not that well but will come across them from time to time. I'm not sure of their residential status, I expect that they are UK citizens, nor their politics. A bit of an elephant in the room "hi, I see you have invaded a sovereign state" (reminds me of the Father Ted is a Racist sketch).

Anyone in a similar situation? Any people of Russian heritage posting on this site?

I wouldn't think it's a problem to just straight up ask them if you run into them and are striking up a conversation...I.e Nice weather we've been having? How are the kids? What do you make of everything going on in Ukraine?....that's not rude at all in my book, and also if asked in that fashion doesn't pre-suppose anything about how they might answer...and also leave them free to not really commit to any sort of answer if they don't want to....but I'd be surprised if a native Russian didn't have a view, and people generally love being asked their opinion on something they care about...
Looking at another thread on the Forum you could also ask were they pleased that they financed Trump and Brexit, and whether they will be following the winter Paralympics. Oh and are they proud about the humanitarian mess in Syria that they contributed to. OK poor taste ...

    • I know people won’t have any sympathy but the SEND challenge was brought up when taxing parents who have opted for independent school to meet a child’s SEND needs. Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
