Moth Problerm

There's no easy solution to moth infestation.

You need to do a thorough clean of your flat including checking all the carpets especially underneath furniture to find where they are nesting and breeding. You need to vacuum your cupboards and drawers wherever you have found moths to get rid of the eggs which are tiny and gritty. Vacuum all the floors thoroughly and regularly. You have to get rid of anything made of wool including carpets and clothes and if you do have wool clothes you want to keep then keep them in sealed bags. Moths particularly like clothes that are unwashed so piles of unwashed woollen clothes that don't move much (eg in teenagers bedrooms )would be moth heaven.

If you do all that then anti moth sprays, moth pheremone traps, cedar, lavender etc have a chance to keep them at bay. If you don't do all that then they will always stay with or return to you even after professional treatments.

Lavender, cedar and other "natural" remedies smell nice, but they don't work. I spent a fortune on them until I realised this.

You don't need to get rid of anything woollen. Moth papers among your clothes will kill eggs and larvae, as well as adult moths. But it's the larvae which eat things (not just wool).

Sticky moth traps will attract and kill the flying adult male moths, hopefully before they mate with the sneaky female moths who slide very quickly into low dark places before you can squish them.

Once you have the situation under control, you need to change the traps and papers regularly according to the instructions, otherwise the moths will come back. I speak from experience 🤣

You can also get hanging cassettes for wardrobes etc.

I can't advise on carpets. I got rid of all mine.

Moth control doesn't come cheap. I always Google the cheapest online supplier before I get in new supplies.

I don't like using chemicals, but it's the only reliable way. You can get things like tennis racquets which zap them with an electric charge from a battery, but whilst fun to do, it doesn't get rid of many moths, sadly.

ETA: You can also get canister things which you fumigate a room with, but that's a bit heavy duty.

Hi dogwin,

I'm just going to repeat what I wrote on here 3 years ago as I had so many moths that were eating my clothes and bedroom carpets. I bought every remedy available...moth balls, strips, sprays, pheremone traps, hoovering, putting my clothes in the freezer to kill off the eggs [!!!!], etc.

I wasted SO much money.

I was so persecuted by them in my home, I tried everything. They ate all my clothes, I had train tracks of where they had eaten into my bedroom carpet. Every time I saw one I responded like some crazy person.

I then bought this....https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pest-Expert-Killing-Clothes-approved/dp/B075LH2SDR/ref=sr_1_10?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1535037805&sr=1-10&keywords=Pest+Expert ... and, after using a lot of the spray, I have not seen a single moth since then..2019!

Good luck.

    • You'd need to get a proper quote (or three) for instance removing a cast iron bath is a very different job from removing an acrylic one. Again what pipe work will be being joined into - matching old imperial pipes with modern metric ones is different from like to like, as is dealing with a copper or an iron distribution system. The amount (area) of retiling required is an issue, as will be the state of the wall behind the tiles. It may of course all be very plain sailing, or not. Have a first look at plumber recommendations on the relevant pages on this site. If it's all easy then 3 days work may be sufficient. But it could be a week if there are snags.
    • Hi. Can anyone suggest a plumber for the job below? Replace bath tub with a shower enclosure, putting pipes to showerhead behind wall, re-titling damaged/removed tiles Also any idea of the costs involved for the labour as we will buy the items required?
    • Aria came round to fix my tub drain when I'd messed up the seal. Came within hours, fixed the tub, and ran a bath to make sure it was okay. Here's where the fun starts. While he was over, I asked him questions about the rest of the plumbing round the house. I had just moved into a Victorian home that was previously being rented. Unsurprisingly, we found another leak in the tub and a drip in the kitchen tap.  He came back the next day to put a better pipe in my bathtub and replace the kitchen sink. Painstakingly figured out how to replace the hard-to-access kitchen sink without cutting through the wood panel with the help of his builder friend, Mark. Answered all my questions and clearly knew his stuff. All this right before Christmas holidays!
