For next week (27th Aug, Bank Hol Saturday) we have just one all day ride at present. Keep a look out for a notice about a possible second short ride. Remember you should register on Eventbrite, details below. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling (How to cancel).

Ride for 27th will be led by Jamie. As Jamie says: “We last did the Boat Race ride on 2nd April when it was unpleasantly cold with a bitter east wind in our faces. One hopes that late August will be more forgiving.” The long range forecast is much better, 22 degrees, sunny intervals, gentle breeze. Here are the detailed instructions. Note also that this ride does not involve any trains. These have proved very unreliable recently…

Boat Race Course Ride < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/boat-race-course-cycle-ride-tickets-405412077437>

Mission

To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile Boat Race route from Putney to Chiswick Bridge.

Route

Riders should note that this is predominantly a relaxed and social event that involves some enjoyable cycling in stages for about 22 miles in all. 80% of our route is on quieter roads and unsurfaced river paths. This circular route is predominantly flat and thus suitable for all types of bicycles and most rider abilities. There will be loo stops along the route.

From Waterloo Station the ride will follow the river path west to reach the start at Putney embankment. From Putney we will stay on the south side of the river and head to Mortlake before crossing the river by the finish post at Chiswick Bridge. We will then follow the river back down the north river side passing Chiswick Eyot, Hammersmith Bridge and the Fulham Palace on our return to Waterloo Station which should be approximately 4.30pm.

Coordinating Instructions and Timings

Riders will meet at 10.00am on Saturday 2nd April at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge.

A Riders safety briefing will be given at 10.00am.

Rations and Water

Our first coffee stop will be at Putney embankment around 11.00 am where we will stop for about 30 minutes. We will stop for lunch around 12.30 at The Ship Inn at Chiswick Bridge south side overlooking the River. Riders are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch/snack should they wish.

Time permitting we will also stop at the stunning Fulham Palace for tea and cakes before returning to Waterloo.

Checks and Equipment

Riders are urged to pre-check general ABC bike serviceability before the event. A = Air in tyres,

B = Brakes, C= Chain & gears etc.

Communications

It is important that all Riders have Jamie Pedrick’s mobile phone number 07976 803741 in their phones in case of any issues on the day. Please feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event by phone or email on [email protected]

These rides are part of the Healthy Riders group, organised by Bruce Lynn on behalf of Southwark Cyclists https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/. Like everything else we do, our activities are all free. We co-operate with other London Cycling Campaign groups like Greenwich Cyclists. The LCC details are here: https://lcc.org.uk/.

and another one

In addition to the long Boat Race Ride (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/boat-race-course-cycle-ride-tickets-405412077437) (see above) we will have a short, very easy ride.

NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, link below

Three Prisons and a Ferryman’s Seat    < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/three-prisons-and-a-ferrymans-seat-cycle-ride-tickets-405955181877 >

Southwark was famous for its prisons in the 18 and 19th centuries. Learn about them and some other local history on a great 2 hour, 9.5 mile, flat ride with Bruce leading. Start/finish in Peckham Square (Peckham Library, Peckham Pulse, SE15 5RY), 10am start, 12 noon finish. Starts along Surrey Canal path to Burgess Park, then via Bagshot St to the New Kent Rd. Stops at Newington Gardens (Location of Horsemonger Lane Goal), Angel Place (Location of Marshalsea Prison), Bear Gardens (Location of the Ferryman’s Seat) and Scovell Rd (Location of Kings Bench Prison). Return via Quietway 1 (Q1), Coopers Rd and the Canal Path again. As usual keeping to quiet roads, almost entirely, plus some nice path at the start/finish. Just a tiny bit of busier road.

This excellent themed ride was first done in 2017 led by Harry Clark and most recently by Bruce in 2021 (see report). Harry wrote a quite detailed information sheet, available with the ride reports and photos here. Harry is these days leading his own rides, see “Lets Go”, https://www.facebook.com/groups/2243369265928023). Ride route at https://tinyurl.com/eafmcnf5.

    • https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/police-hunt-attack-south-london-b1247389.html Apologies if already posted on here - did look, couldn't find anything... 'The Metropolitan Police have appealed for help to find a man after a woman was seriously injured in an unprovoked attack in south London. The woman, in her 20s, was assaulted on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich at around 4.45pm on Monday August 25. She was treated by paramedics for injuries to her face and her jaw was broken in the attack. The victim was then taken to hospital and she continues to be supported by specialist officers. Officers are now searching for the suspect and are urging members of the public to come forward if they have information. He is described as a black man in his 30s or 40s with balding hair. He was wearing dark clothing during the attack. He is said to have approached the woman while she was by herself before swearing at her and then hitting her in the face. Detective constable Charlotte Kerr, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are working hard to find the person we believe is responsible for this senseless and unprovoked attack. “While we continue our enquiries, we hope our increased neighbourhood police presence will offer some reassurance to women and girls throughout the local area. “If you saw anything on Monday, 25 August – particularly between the junction of Lordship Lane and Chesterfield Grove at around 16:45hrs - do not hesitate to get in touch with us. “No matter how small you think your information is, it may be the key that unlocks our investigation.” Any witnesses or anyone who can help identify the suspect is asked to please contact the Met via 101, quoting 5018/25AUG or 01/7897951/25. Those who wish to share information anonymously can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'
    • We live a little further down, on Pymers Mead. Traffic is terrible (always has been, but worse since the introduction of the Southwark LTNs). It's mainly the school drop -- traffic is noticeably lighter once the private schools break up  Have a few friends who live on that side of CR backing on to the train line. None has had any major complaints and the gardens on that stretch are fairly long, so you're not right on the line. Some have kids who go to Charter North -- its catchment defintely extends to Croxted Road. Other state secondaries nearby are Elmgreen and, of course, Kingsdale, although that doesn't have a catchment -- pure lottery
