Coal effect gas fires advice

Recommended Posts

WHenver I ask about installing one of these in an existing fireplace I am told I have to have a 2 " deep hearth- or have a fender built around the hearth. My slate hearth is only 1" deep, and I cannot make it any deeper.

I have seen lots of gas fires in houses that do not appear to meet these requirements- am I missing a trick?

Is there a way round it?

Thanks

Apparently these are new regulations, so gas fires you see elsewhere were probably fitted prior to that. I suppose the easy way around it is to fit a fender? A decent one will be around ?100 although Argos do one for ?30 or so.

You can always use solid fuel, i.e. smokeless coal.

Casa Fireplaces in Bellenden Road told me that my solid coal fireplace was non-compliant with today's regulations...we still use it, as it's been used that way for over 120 years!

If it's got to that stage I've heard good things about these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/First4Spares-Debris-Collector-Cleaner-Collection/dp/B007ADELQY/ref=pd_sim_sbs_diy_1

I take it simply refusing to clean up is not an option? I was forced to as a child, so it's second nature to me!

    • It was indeed in the vicinity of DKH. I live on the ED estate and I could tell it must be close by because of the noise. When I left my house this morning I found the culprits litter still in the middle of the st. It looked like they had lit a whole box on fire in the middle of the road. My cat jumped out of her skin. I’ll try and report it on Southwark website same as I have had to with other illegal use this week. Any other ideas for what we can do with the photos? Maybe one of the Southwark councillors. It’s outrageous and dangerous behaviour.

    • If you "cotton on" and read the council announcement, it clearly states "The library will be closed from 17 November until late June or early July 2026."  https://www.southwark.gov.uk/2025/dulwich-library-closing-refurbishment
    • I’ve been seeing Lisa at goose green clinic for energy work for a year now.  Lisa is kind, caring and hugely supportive. She is wonderfully masterful and trained as a reiki master for 20 plus years. Alongside other energy work.  My time spent with her is like therapy. An emotional safe space for deep conversations and reflection followed by relaxing and energising healing work.  each experience I’ve had has been different, the end result remains the same. Feel lighter, almost euphoric and almost float home. Definitely an experience not to be missed.  https://www.goosegreenclinic.net/therapies/healing-energy-work/
