Hi Sue.

You definitely shouldn't need to keep logging in.

I suspect the problem is that you have some cookies stored on your phone/laptop from the previous forum software which are conflicting with the new forum software.

Could I ask you to try something which might help? If you go to the bottom of any page on the forum, click the icon in the corner and press the Delete Cookies link. Pressing it will log you out, however next time you login it should clear any conflicting cookies. Hopefully that will stop you getting logged out in the future.

Let me know if you are still consistently having to login even after you've used that Delete Cookies link.

Logging out will delete the 'remember me' login key on that machine. Is that what's happening?

Alternatively, I see that manually deleting all my browser cookies for the forum after having closed it produces the same outcome. So perhaps you should check whether your browser's set to delete all recent cookies at the end of a session. That should probably be configurable somewhere among its privacy or security settings.

Observation for Joe: my second para. was an edit of the already posted post, but doesn't have any added annotation to say so; nor does this one. But an edit just made to an old post in The Lounge has been annotated.

I don't log out, so it's not that.

Would deleting all cookies not also delete the fact that you are logged in?

I never once had this problem with the old forum, and now it just keeps happening.

Its a bit of a weird one. I've not been getting logged out on my own devices, but I'm sure that it happening to certain people as I can see you are having to submit logins on a regular basis.

I still think its related to some conflict caused by cookies for people who used the old forum system. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Thanks for the update Sue.

To be honest its a bit of a mystery to what caused this. It seems like some people's cookies were being reset to a 'guest' user. But the issue wasn't consistently reproducible for me, so its very difficult for me to investigate :(

Please let me know if it does happen again. It if does I will raise a support request on the phpBB community forums.

    • Word to the wise: please be careful if you’re around Dulwich Village during the school run.  While walking on the pavement down Carlton Avenue this morning c. 8.45am, I was hit from behind by a child riding a bicycle. When I raised this with his father, he (the father) behaved inappropriately. I highlight the following tactics deployed against me, so if you choose to say anything, you may come off better in any exchange than I. The father chose to make it more about how I reacted, rather than what had happened, namely that his son was riding on a pavement, seemingly without supervision, out of his father’s line of sight. The father claimed I was over-reacting, said that his son was 4-years old and didn’t do it deliberately. He didn’t ask me if I was alright. And apologised with a ‘but’: “I’m sorry if he hit your leg, but your reaction is over the top.”  He took no responsibility for his child’s action or his lack of parental supervision. As I walked away, I heard him and two other adults talking and laughing about my reaction – yes, laughing.  I don’t think he or his son learned anything useful from the incident about keeping themselves and others safe, such that it would change their behaviour. I did and share it here as to place, time, nature of incident, minimising tactics etc. as a heads-up to others. I didn’t sustain any injuries or damage to my clothing or property. Others who are older/younger, have mobility issues, walk with buggies, children, pets etc. may fare differently. Forewarned is forearmed, guys.

    • Very good news! The Palmerston flourished under Jamie, so Franklins will be in safe hands, I'm sure
    • Is it just me, or are some of the cars around East Dulwich now roughly the size of a modest one-bed flat? Our lovely Victorian streets were designed for horses, carts and the occasional penny-farthing — not rolling apartment blocks on wheels. Earlier today someone tried to pass me while driving squarely down the middle of the road, seemingly too terrified to move over in case their wing mirror brushed a leaf. We ended up in a sort of slow-motion standoff that felt less “road sharing” and more “Wild West showdown”. I completely understand wanting a safe, comfy car — but when the vehicle is wider than the street and both drivers need a deep breathing exercise just to squeeze past each other, it might be time to ask whether the car fits the postcode. Maybe we need Victorian-era width limits reinstated… or complimentary tape measures issued with every CPZ permit? 😉
