We have 2 rides for Oct 8th, one 4 hours, one 2.5-3 hours. Remember you should register on Eventbrite, details below. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling (How to cancel).

For info: Reports on last weeks (Sept24th) rides at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2022/ride-reports-24-sept-2022/. Also more photos on WhatsApp (“The Vulnerables”).

Reminder about tomorrow’s (Oct 1st) rides. There is space on the ride from Canada Water to view the amazing tented city and associated arrangements for the Marathon on Sunday 2nd. Ride 1. Greenwich to the Olympic Park Loop < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-the-olympic-park-loop-cycle-ride-tickets-429904815877 > .

Start 9.30 am (note earlier start time) at Est finish 1:30. Eva leading this 20 mile ride. A long, flat 32km ride from Cutty Sark Gardens to the Eastern and Southern borders of the Olympic Park via Regents Canal. Riders should be prepared to ride single file alongside the canal. We will look at interesting graffiti in the Hackney Wick area and admire the Here East complex. After a coffee break we will return via the Greenway and cross the river with the cable car. Please remember to bring your Oyster/payment cards. In case the queue at the cable car is too long, we will cycle back to Island Gardens and cross the river via the Greenwich foot tunnel. Route at https://www.komoot.com/tour/912023245?share_token=a8VhVpkCU48LX7LXLkLfKYHkycg5ZC9q8z1YTHZkqXMSQpCKUn&ref=wtd [note Komoot will not allow cable car and has inserted a ferry trip!]

Ride 2. The World Reimagined Globes < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-world-reimagined-globes-cycle-ride-tickets-429907664397 >

Ride Leader Philippa. Start 10am for a 2.5-3 hour ride. Start/finish location Peckham Square (Peckham Library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY. Over 40 large artistic globes have appeared across London. These are part of an education programme to improve our understanding of UK history, particularly with respect to the slave trade. More info at https://www.theworldreimagined.org/globes/. The globes are fun to look at and several rides, including a postscript to one of last week’s Healthy Rides (see link to report above), have toured some of them. Philippa’s route will be a combo of the Lambeth and Southwark trail with some of the City trail, so about 15 globes in all.

Note that all planned rides are subject to change last minute due to rail (& ferry) strikes, illness, extreme weather etc. Whenever possible we will keep start time and place as advertised. We will always try to contact registered riders by e-mail.

These rides are part of the Healthy Riders group, organised by Bruce Lynn on behalf of Southwark Cyclists https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/. Like everything else we do, our activities are all free. We co-operate with other London Cycling Campaign groups like Greenwich Cyclists. The LCC details are here: https://lcc.org.uk/.

    • My mum (91 years young!) well remembers going to Austin's as a child, which she described as an 'Aladdin's Cave'!  She absolutely loved it - and is still a shopping fiend to this day (I 'blame' Austin's 😉). Going back up Peckham Rye, passing Austin's on your right hand-side, just past Phillips Walk (so not far from Austin's at all), I believe there was a British Relay Wireless shop - this would have been in the late 1930s/early 1940s.  Does anyone know anything about this? My grandad (my mum's dad) used to manage it; it was severely damaged in The Blitz - but I am having trouble locating it.  Mum's memory is dim (she was 6 at the time); she originally thought it was in Rye Lane, but we think now it was in Peckham Rye just up from Phillips Walk (originally Phillips Road).
    • Thanks everyone, this will need to be reported again as the fox was still mobile and walking down the road when last seen... hopefully someone will spot and report.
