'NO NEW PRIME MINISTER WITHOUT A GENERAL ELECTION!

We’re hearing reports that a significant number of Conservative Party MPS are ALREADY planning to change their leader and that they intend to do so WITHOUT calling a general election.

Some of those MPs are even suggesting that Boris Johnson should be reinstalled in Number 10.

Forcing two new Prime Ministers on the country without the mandate that comes with a general election would be an affront to democracy that we simply cannot allow (especially if that were to mean a return to power for disgraced former PM Boris Johnson).

We need to make clear to the Conservative Party that this a BIG RED LINE that we will not let them cross.

Open Britain believes that any attempt to cross this red line should be met with mass public demonstrations across the country. We believe such action would be justified because this Conservative government is working with a range of opaque think tanks to implement a programme of right wing policies that would never receive a democratic mandate if put to the people in a general election.

If you agree, please sign the petition today, encourage as many of your freinds as possible to do the same, and tick the box so we can update you as things develop (things are likely to move fast in the coming days/weeks).

Tell us in the comments which of YOUR red lines have already been broken by this government and, importantly, which one made you realise it's time to step up and take action.

Thank you! '

The Labour Party 'forced' the country into having Gordon Brown as PM without a GE, so it's disingenuous to paint this as solely a 'Tory thing'.

However, there is clearly a problem when a replacement PM takes a completely new direction of travel like we're seeing with Truss, going against what they stood for at a GE. Not only does Truss not have mandate to do these things from the country, she doesn't even have a mandate from her own MPs.

Rightly or wrongly, we don't have a written constitution to prevent something like this happening, instead relying on MPs to 'do the right thing'. The whole parliamentary process needs overhauling including the House of Lords and the ''First Past the Post'' voting system...

Won't be a GE for two years because the Conservatives know they would be annihilated.

The electorate won't forget that Truss and Kwarzi crashed the economy within 27 days or being in office, they also won't forgive the forced increase in mortgage repayments because Kwarzi made a major error in his tax "giveaway", the ratcheting up of domestic fuel costs etc.

£400 helps but in no way of sets the increases.

It's generally worth checking the petitions to parliament because the gov has to respond to these, including considering it for a debate, once they get past 100,000 – so at least it gets noticed. There is one here https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/619781 that calls for a general election to decide who should take this mess forward. It's already over 500k so due for a response but still worth signing.

    • The current wave of xenophobia is due to powerful/influential people stirring up hatred.  It;'s what happened in the past, think 1930s Germany.  It seems to be even easier now as so many get their information from social media, whether it is right or wrong.  The media seeking so called balance will bring some nutter on, they don't then bring a nutter on to counteract that. They now seem to turn to Reform at the first opportunity. So your life is 'shite', let;s blame someone else.  Whilst sounding a bit like a Tory, taking some ownership/personal responsibility would be a start.  There are some situations where that may be more challenging, in deindustrialised 'left behind' wasteland we can't all get on our bikes and find work.  But I loathe how it is now popular to blame those of us from relatively modest backgrounds, like me, who did see education and knowledge as a way to self improve. Now we are seen by some as smug liberals......
    • Kwik Fit buggered up an A/C leak diagnosis for me (saying there wasn't one, when there was) and sold a regas. The vehicle had to be taken to an A/C specialist for condensor replacement and a further regas. Not impressed.
    • Yes, these are all good points. I agree with you, that division has led us down dangerous paths in the past. And I deplore any kind of racism (as I think you probably know).  But I feel that a lot of the current wave of xenophobia we're witnessing is actually more about a general malaise and discontent. I know non-white people around here who are surprisingly vocal about immigrants - legal or otherwise. I think this feeling transcends skin colour for a lot of people and isn't as simple as, say, the Jew hatred of the 1930s or the Irish and Black racism that we saw laterally. I think people feel ignored and looked down upon.  What you don't realise, Sephiroth, is that I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying. I just think that looking down on people because of their voting history and opinions is self-defeating. And that's where Labour's getting it wrong and Reform is reaping the rewards.
    • @Sephiroth you made some interesting points on the economy, on the Lammy thread. Thought it worth broadening the discussion. Reeves (irrespective of her financial competence) clearly was too downbeat on things when Labour came into power. But could there have been more honesty on the liklihood of taxes going up (which they have done, and will do in any case due to the freezing of personal allowances).  It may have been a silly commitment not to do this, but were you damned if you do and damned if you don't?
