Get some exercise and learn safe, quiet ways around our bit of London

NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.

We have 2 rides for Dec 10th, one 3.5 hours, one 2.5 hours. Remember you should register on Eventbrite, details below. If you cannot make it, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling (How to cancel).

Ride 1. Hidden Treasures – A Ride from Peckham to the Thames < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hidden-treasures-a-ride-from-peckham-to-the-thames-tickets-480874617927

Start 10am, Peckham Square (by Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). Plan is a flat ride from Peckham to London Bridge and return via Blackfriars Bridge using mostly quiet streets, parks and cycleways.

Route passes several points of interest many of which are relatively little known. Hence the “Hidden Treasures” title. These include Stompie the Soviet-era tank, Del boy’s Reliant Robin, some WWII stretchers, Iliffe Yard artisan workshops, the (ex-) Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens (Pasley Park) and the Walworth Low-Traffic Neighbourhood. Will be about 11miles, 2.5 hours, which gives us time for a coffee stop at the Little Cat Café in Myatt's Field Park. Simon Saville leading.

Ride 2. Burgess Park to Wandsworth Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/burgess-park-to-wandsworth-park-healthy-cycle-ride-tickets-480873705197

Start/Finish Burgess Park (Fuorvito Cafe, Chumleigh Gardens, Off Albany Rd. SE5 0RJ). Start 10am, finish 1.30pm. Idea is to explore a bit further west on the south side of the river. Outward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then round the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. Coffee break in Wandsworth Par, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course.

Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. 26km, some upgrades on return leg, a lot of park and riverside is flat and traffic free. Bruce leading. Route at https://goo.gl/94U3Ve. Report from ride on May 7th here. Not likely to extend to Putney in December…

These rides are part of the Healthy Riders group, organised by Bruce Lynn on behalf of Southwark Cyclists https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/. Like everything else we do, our activities are all free. We co-operate with other London Cycling Campaign groups like Greenwich Cyclists. The LCC details are here: https://lcc.org.uk/.

    • Hello, just wondered if you found anything? I'm also looking for a studio space, perhaps sharing.
    • From what I have gathered from Bradbury Oak residents  I have spoken with, that at a meeting with RNIB earlier in the year, none of the residents were in favour of new build. There is the implication that rent rises are anticipated to help towards building costs. Rent is currently in the region of £300 pw - as with most sheltered housing (council and Housing Association), Since these rents also include maintenance charges, utility charges - Housing Benefit is only applicable to the actual 'rent element' per flat.
    • At the Dulwich Hill SNT meeting last night we spoke about Met. Engage. Dulwich Hill had signed up 185 households. Scheme  had been trialled in other parts of the country successfully and now the Met. Police are rolling it out, To the end of August, the Met Police had gathered 17,000 registrations which equites to 2% of households.
    • Personally, I think the death sentance should be brought back for anyone found to be harming animals.
