Today it was pre announced that the small metal n20 (nitrous oxide) canisters will be banned and possession will become a criminal offence.

This is supposed to stop young people using it as a recreational drug however it will cause issues for anyone who owns a cream whipper or professional chefs.

Are the government using a sledge hammer to crack a nut and if n20 possession is made illegal what happens to people who have it in a draw for making whipped cream.

In fact with no real alternatives on offer does it make thousands of cream whippers* up and down the country obsolete ?

Is there a better way of controlling it to stop misuse?

* cream whippers is not a euphemism for some shady activity 🙄

This might just be the two of us. I was thinking of posting under the imaginative title no laughing matter.

Total overreaction and sadly Labour are supporting this. Not sure why they didn't listen to the government advisory committee:

The response is thank you advisory committee but no thank you

Do something useful and curb your mates in the tobacco industry selling vapes to school kids, or something substantial on online betting - noting of course for balance that it was Blair who opened this Pandora's box. Or maybe even the legitimate highs of sugar in our diet......

It's all fun and games till it ends in tears

There does need to be more focus on online / in person gambling and vaping but n20 abuse is a low hanging fruit target.

Wonder how the possession point will pan out, will granny get sent to jail for having a couple of canisters at the back of a draw ?

Will Chefs be the go to person ?

Will tips be full of cream whippers discarded after they have spent their last load?

Its just not a practical law to enforce and I bet online retailers are doing a roaring trade at the moment to satisfy peoples future demands for whipping.

Nextdoor has been infiltrated by the government publicizing their red meat policies on anti-social behaviour. And you are not allowed to comment on the official announcement. They will be getting hippy's hair cut in the streets next (as in the book/film Centigrade 234. Well I suppose it suits Nextdoor as most posts are reactionary on it about dodgy goings on and dodgy people. It makes the EDF seem a hotbed of progressive thinking.

Well at least the Libdems, as pointless as they are, have spoken out unlike Labour kowtowing

    • Miss Robson is the last of the old school independent vets. All the chains are have seriously hiked their prices over the last few years which now makes pet ownership only possible for the wealthy few. Even with pet insurance -( which often excludes items or has ‘deductibles’ ) it is just so much money. A visit with some medication is often £150 - £200. The vets themselves are excellent.
    • Awful. A Google search came up with this, but will he check his office email over Christmas? Maybe worth also contacting local councillor? 'To contact Southern Housing's CEO, Paul Hackett, you can try his direct email, [email protected], or use the general contact email [email protected], as well as calling their main number, 0300 303 1066, for general inquiries or to be directed to the executive level.' Also, from the website: https://www.southernhousing.org.uk/latest-news/2025/contacting-us-over-the-festive-period   'Contacting us about an emergency? If you have an emergency outside of the above times over the festive period, such as severe flooding, an uncontainable leak, gas leak, complete electrical failure or lift breakdown, please call us on 0300 303 1066' I hope it is sorted out soon.

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
