Over the May Day Bank Holiday we have 3 rides – two as usual on Saturday morning plus a special long ride on May 1st. Note the early 9am start on May 1st

April 29th, Ride 1, The Longest Street.

<  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-longest-street-cycle-ride-tickets-623780834267 > Believe it or not, Rotherhithe Street is claimed, at 1.5 miles, to be the longest street in London (e.g. see https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/rotherhithe-street). It is also quite an old street and passes several interesting places including Surrey Docks Farm, the Brunel Tunnel and the Mayflower Pub. Start time 10am, Simon S, leading. Start/finish Peckham Square (Peckham library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). Duration 2.5 hours. Route to and from Rotherhithe will be quiet streets or paths. Outward route wandering through Camberwell and Walworth to Cycleway 4. Return via Southwark Park where there will be a coffee stop.

April 29th, Ride 2, Peckham to Shooters Hill. <

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-shooters-hill-cycle-ride-tickets-623754395187  > Aim is to get to Severndroog Castle on top of Shooters Hill.  Start time 10am, Bruce leading. Start/finish Peckham Square (Peckham library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). Duration 3.5 hours including refreshment break. Outward route uses bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge. Then off road and quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. Brief stop in Well Hall Pleasaunce to prepare for the summit ascent.  Ride through the foothills to the southwest corner of Jack Wood, then the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. Plenty of time to just walk up - really steep section only 300m long.  Fast return route using initially busy Shooters Hill Road, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park.  Whiz down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Cycleway 10 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Cycleway 10 to Surrey Canal Rd, Bridgehouse Meadows and quiet streets back to Peckham Square.  Bruce leading, route at https://bit.ly/2Fv5z5Z.  Last rode this route August last year, report here.

May 1st. Ride the Monopoly Board <
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ride-the-monopoly-board-tickets-623791064867  > Following the great interest in his Easter Monday long ride (see report here) Werner has agreed to attempt a ride of the Monopoly Board. From Old Kent Road to Park Lane with everything in between (including going to Jail). This will be a 4 hour, 40km, ride and we will start at 9 am at the Southwark Needle on the south side of London Bridge. Route NOT in board order (Sorry – takes too long). Will cycle clockwise, doing south of the river location Old Kent Road first, then Blackfriars Bridge, Trafalgar Square, Park Lane, Marylebone Station and back via the Angel. Coffee break in Regents Park.

These Saturday morning (plus BH rides) are organised by Southwark Cyclists https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. https://lcc.org.uk/. Like everything we do the rides are free and as sociable and friendly as we can make them. For more info contact https://groups.google.com/g/southwarkcyclists

    • Hi, I went to the council's planning portal to look at the application, and I encourage others to look at it. It looks like a pleasant building, with thoughtful landscaping. as Pugwash said, the big oak would be retained, only two smaller trees are supposed to be cut, one of which is already dead according to the Tree Survey. It sounds like 38 people in great need of it will gain supported housing thanks to this development, a very positive change. Of course a solution has to be found for the 3 who will need to find other accommodation during the works, but that doesn't seem enough of a reason to oppose the development. The current building is 4 stories, so I would be surprised if one extra storey was considered objectionable, especially considering the big oak stands between the building and the neighbours' back gardens and the fact that the neighbours it's backing onto are all 5 stories houses themselves or only have blank walls facing the building. In the context where affordable housing is sorely missing, a 100% supported housing development is great news. Personally I've never seen a less objectionable planning request
