About the retreat

Join Miriam, Negeen and the Oru team for a sunshine filled winter retreat in Sri Lanka! Sri Lankan food, culture and community values have influenced Oru Space greatly, and we’re so excited to be taking you on an adventure to this incredible country. This week-long retreat will be an amazing opportunity to practice lots of healing, nourishing and revitalising yoga with our teachers Miriam and Negeen, whilst making new connections, exploring a new country, eating delicious nutritious food and getting time to yourself to relax and restore. On top of this, we’ll be escaping the depths of the UK winter where the weather in Sri Lanka is expected to be 28-30 degrees!

Each day will start and end with longer yoga practices including dynamic flow, power yoga, soothing yin and restorative yoga, yoga nidra, free movement and expression, meditation, journaling and more. All levels of experience are welcome, however we recommend that you have a minimum of 6 months experience of going to classes semi-regularly, so that you can get the most out of the retreat. Where you’ll stay and excursions Welikande Estate is an eco-conscious and sustainable Yoga retreat centre in the heart of Sri Lanka, The Knuckle Mountains. Perched on the top of the mountain, overlooking the surrounding valleys and Victoria Lake, offering acres of gardens with a yoga shala and meditation studio, a Spa center, a swimming pool, and mountain view accommodations. There are lots of options for local experiences, from swimming in waterfalls, learning how to make a Sri Lankan curry with a sweet couple down in Heeloya Valley (and of course eat this for lunch), hiking surrounded by paddy fields and tea plantations high on the Knuckles Mountain range with views as far as the horizon goes, and cultural trips to nearby temples and towns. All activities are optional, if you’d rather relax by the pool or enjoy walks in the local area then you are more than welcome to!

Activities will be paid for as an additional expense on top of your retreat payment.

7 nights accommodation at Welikande Estate in a room of your choice Daily yoga classes 2 additional workshops through the week 3 vegetarian meals a day including local Sri Lankan delicacies Teas, coffee, juices throughout the day

    • Our camera caught two folks doing this. One of them led me to believe the delivery driver was in on it as he left the package in a very odd place that the thief (who arrived about 10 minutes after from a direction where he could not have seen where the driver left it) went straight to it and took it - but he then dumped it halfway down the next road as clearly packets of freeze-dried food for a DofE award wasn't to his liking (karma sucks!). The second time a guy pulled his bike up in broad daylight, walked down to our door, opened the box, threw the empty box down and stuffed what he had found in his backpack and brazenly waved at the camera and then cycled off. Police asked us to upload his picture but we never heard anything back.

    • In the 1960s my husband went to a private day school, Although he was a bright child having won a couple of scholarships to other private schools, his father chose this particular one. He went from 11 - 14 years and left as unhappy with the set up which was based on ethnicity. All boys with both parents English were placed in the A stream regardless of academic ability, Boys with an Irish background were placed in B stream. All others were C streamed - this included boys with a Black or Asian  background, mixed race or mixed European background. His schooldays came to an end when he wished to learn Latin and he was told that no boy in C stream could participate in this subject. His father (not English) was very upset at this and withdrew him from the school and sent him  to a country boarding school.  The experiences he had with his schooling culminated in a breakdown of his mental health and several months in Maudsley. He had low self esteem and it took several decades for him to understand that it was the school system and not his ability which had failed him
