Kindle advice

I am going to the US shortly and wanted to buy a Kindle, which is a hand-held device onto which you download books. Does anyone on here have one, or is it totally impossible if you are a foreigner? I fear that you have to have a US address and bank account to set up a download account with Amazon.

Is Kindle available to customers outside the United States?

At this time, we are unable to offer the Amazon Kindle and associated digital content from the Kindle Store to our international customers due to import/export laws and other restrictions.
