We have 2 new rides for the 21st, one long, one short.

Ride 1  London Black History  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-black-history-ride-tickets-738937460837

October is Black History Month and Werner and his neighbour Sam have designed a short ride visiting sites associated with Black History in London, mostly pre-Windrush. Start at 10am from London Bridge (Southwark Needle), plan to be finished by 1pm. Route will include (not in this order!) Royal Exchange, St Thomas’ Hospital, Nelson’s Column, Senate House, British Museum, Dr Johnson's house and a few City locations with links to slavery (e.g. Jamaica Coffee House, Cornhill). 12 mile circuit. We are reckoning on up to 3 hours, depending on length of stops.

Ride 2. Cutty Sark to Wanstead Park < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cutty-sark-to-wanstead-park-ride-tickets-738942255177

Start 9.30am at Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Note the early start. Hope to finish back at Greenwich at 1.30, but with this new route not certain about timing so please allow for possible 2pm finish. Route out: round Thames path to London Cable Car (Emirates Airline no more), fly across, on to Beckton Corridor off road path and round past Beckton Alps, bit of cycle path and back streets to Wanstead Park. Return across Wanstead Flats, quiet streets to Olympic Park, Hertford Union Canal, Regents Canal Towpath/Mile End Park, west side of Isle of Dogs to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. If the lifts are working, complete ride by crossing to the Cutty Sark. If not, end the ride at the tunnel. Riders who wish to cross will be guided to Mudchute DLR Station where there is step free access. There is also step free access at Greenwich DLR station. Note this is a long route with a lot of continuous riding. We will be at our usual easy pace, but probably cycling for 3 hours +. You get a rest on the Cable Car (remember to bring some way of paying the fare) and a coffee break. Nevertheless worth bringing a snack and a drink.

If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/

These rides are organised by Southwark Cyclists and are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

    • I'd put short odds on that but who would be his likely successor?
    • Hi, I went to the council's planning portal to look at the application, and I encourage others to look at it. It looks like a pleasant building, with thoughtful landscaping. as Pugwash said, the big oak would be retained, only two smaller trees are supposed to be cut, one of which is already dead according to the Tree Survey. It sounds like 38 people in great need of it will gain supported housing thanks to this development, a very positive change. Of course a solution has to be found for the 3 who will need to find other accommodation during the works, but that doesn't seem enough of a reason to oppose the development. The current building is 4 stories, so I would be surprised if one extra storey was considered objectionable, especially considering the big oak stands between the building and the neighbours' back gardens and the fact that the neighbours it's backing onto are all 5 stories houses themselves or only have blank walls facing the building. In the context where affordable housing is sorely missing, a 100% supported housing development is great news. Personally I've never seen a less objectionable planning request
    • I also wonder if all this, recently events and so many u turns is going to also be the end of Kier Starmer.
