How often do people get their houses serviced? Someone put a leaflet about house checks through my letter box the other day. It looks really good - for £25 a month they’ll come every 6 months to check everything in your house is working ok and doesn’t need mending or replacing so you don’t have to worry about checking things yourself, like lifting up the carpet to check the underlay is working or if the thermostats dials are moving as expected. And if something needs doing, for a fixed fee of £150 they’ll sort it out (materials extra).

    • I'm not sure what to make of that, Sue  "the Lambeth Country Show will not take place in June 2026."   It's been going for over 50 years. Seems a shame to bin that one off in favour of the other four festivals.
    • We did fine for 300 years with the Royal Mail before the current "competitive" shambles was introduced. Now we have multiple companies with multiple vehicles making deliveries to the same streets every day, none of the workers are employees with decent working conditions or any job security, and consumers have to deal with x different distribution networks and apps and platforms and drop-off points... https://postandparcel.info/12422/news/uk-royal-mails-monopoly-to-end-on-1-january-2006/
    • That's certainly the narrative that runs ad infinitum on the Forum but I wonder how true it is. Speaking for myself I'm very happy M&S, Superdrug, Pret and, in the last century, Sainsbury's arrived and judging from the business they do I'm not alone.
