Cycle rides over the Christmas weekend

Over the Christmas period we are planning 2 rides. On Saturday 23rd we are going to do something different – an afternoon ride. The reason is to see the Christmas Lights to best effect. Then on Boxing Day we will have our regular ride through a deserted City led by Werner. This year a Wren300 theme.

Dec 23rd.  Christmas Lights. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/christmas-lights-cycle-ride-tickets-777846759597 > 3.00 pm start. London Bridge, south side, next to Southwark Gateway Needle, Bruce leading, Werner assisting. Back at 6pm, possibly a bit earlier. Ride will be in 3 sections. A steady ride out via C14 and Blackfriars or Westminster Bridges. Then a complex circuit of the West End including the obvious suspects – Oxford, Regents and Bond Streets – plus a few less well-known.  The central streets will be VERY CROWDED with pedestrians, so extra care needed. There may also be a lot of motor traffic on the main roads. Maintaining cohesion in the group may at times be difficult.  As well as bike lights, please also decorate your bike. A festive light on the helmet is a great way to remain visible in a crowd. Make sure your phone is charged up and you must give a phone number on registration. Someone is bound to be lost at some point! Father Christmas suits are allowed. Final part of the ride will be the short homeward run along the Embankment Cycleway.  Should be an interesting outing.  Join us if you can.

Dec 26th.  Wren Churches in the City. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wren-churches-in-the-city-boxing-day-ride-tickets-777910740967 >10am start. London Bridge, south side, next to Southwark Gateway Needle.  Werner leading. Back at 12 Noon. For several years now Werner has led a ride in the City on 26th December, a day when normally busy City streets have very little motor traffic. This year he will try to visit as many of the Christopher Wren churches as possible, maybe 20 of them. What a busy boy that Christpher Wren must have been in the years following the Great Fire!  This will be our final “Wren” ride in the 300th anniversary year of his death. Great way to burn off some of the Christmas pud and work up an appetite for Boxing Day lunch.

    • Why don’t you speak to head of English at private schools? Might be able to recommend a senior student.. pity now summer hols.   Was how my friend found a tutor for both their kids - maths and science and English.. They also have some mag covering schools as well
    • What is the reason for the change in name? Just curious.
    • Why change it?  You’ve got a fantastic historic, memorable name and you want to change it for something innocuous,  meaningless and empty
    • From the school newsletter:   A New Name for Dog Kennel Hill As you know we have been discussing and consulting with stakeholders about a  name change at DKH for a while. Following engagement with staff, pupils and  families, we gathered all views on a name change for the school and after  careful consideration of the feedback, the Local Committee and the Trust have  agreed with changing the school name to Grove Primary School from  September 2025.  Over the next few months we will begin a gradual process of changing our  name on signage, our website and emails etc. We will keep you updated.  We will be looking at designing a new logo to match the new school name and  will be working closely with a graphic designer to get creative. The school  council will be actively involved in this process. We will share the results with  you as soon as a design has been agreed and confirmed. We will be creating a  new school jumper to replace the old one, once the logo has been finalised. We  will phase this in over time.  We know that this is a welcoming change for some and that there are  parents and children who will be sad about the change. However, as a school  we think it will be a positive change for our school community and we will  work together to ensure that the ethos and culture of DKH will remain!
