The house next door to us (terraced) is being renovated. The builders are clearly on a deadline and behind, and are working late into the night every day of the week and on weekends.

We've repeatedly asked them to stop work after 6pm (as per Southwark's regs) and they promise they will, then continue. The new owners of the property (recently sold) make excuses but don't seem inclined to keep to the mandated building hours.

What's the next step for us to get this to stop - Southwark noise? Building regs? Any advice much appreciated.

On a general point why do we let builders do this.  Most large building projects are at homes such as those owned by people who frequent the forum.  Certain builders may not give a fig.  But property owners pay for them.  We have regular examples of builders working outside hours, in the numerous often grandiose projects around here.

I've stopped complaining to Environmental health as closer neighbours do not seem to be bothered.  Had some success in the past where is was closer to me.  With that in mind do talk with your other neighbours who are affected.  Good luck, it is wrong.

Noise controls, also apply to those doing major DIY themselves.  Rules will be slightly more lenient than with builders, but do you want to p your neighbours off in any case.  Yes?  Oh dear......

Once you have started a job with builder X it's a bit hard to change to builder Y.

    • Gosh, free meal for two.. peanuts as in your time.. well, I thought the salad bar was great, unlimited non alcoholic drinks, free bread, butter, etc, god knows at least six dressings for salads, plus oil and vinegar to do yourself.. yup, main courses were not fab but equally better than Mac Donald’s burgers and always had veggies options, plus fish, and chicken.. Gather one sadly around Beulah Hill area has also closed…. Certainly would not have beaten the door down to get there, but equally reasonable price with unlimited salad bar plus various desserts at an affordable price for all… Not a fan of Wetherspoons at all - all chucked in microwave but equally  can’t knock them for prices and certainly booze is cheap compared to Lordship Lane eateries.. So, what do we all think is going to replace the non exsistent pub? Or would like to see?  If Dulwich Estates were not landlords.. I will start — social housing, new health centre, Aldi/Lidl/Iceland…A building that incorporates community areas/ library/ roof top space for planting, rooms let out at affordable prices, let’s go crazy here, along the same theme, opportunity to ask local residents what they would like or, who ever leases it or buys it to have an open day and show to all interested if not a block of flats, plans and suggestions… might a well dream on.. maybe, will be second hand car garage… tent city in containers - least would not be homeless and have your own space, key and lock…

    • I never took to the Thompsons - maybe it was something to do with Richard's hats - but I still listen to 'Solid Air' and 'Five Leaves Left' fairly regularly. It's incredible to see the volume and breadth of stuff he contributed to outside of 'folk-rock'. It'd make a pretty eclectic playlist. Clearly a very talented bloke. Did you ever get close to having him at one of your 'Goose' gigs?
