There will be 2 rides on Jan 20th. A ride from Dulwich and a ride from Burgess Park.  If this programme sounds familiar it is because we did the same 2 rides in the same week last year!  Reports at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2023/ride-reports-jan-21st-2023/.

Ride 1.  Parks and Ride < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/parks-and-ride-tickets-794847900467>

A bonanza exploration of 33 green spaces - six iconic parks (Burgess, Kennington, Clapham Common, Brockwell, Dulwich and Peckham Rye) and lots of hidden away green spaces. All within a 3km radius. Visiting Camberwell Submarine, Van Gogh, Brixton Windmill (plus two others), Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens (now defunct), and a near-miss prison visit as a bonus!

Start Burgess Park Café (9 Chumleigh St, off Albany Rd, London SE5 0RJ) at 10.00am - back by 1.00pm.  Coffee stop in Dulwich Park (toilets). Easy riding on quiet roads and cycle routes, and through some parks.  Simon S leading. About 14 miles, some gentle slopes, 3 hours.  GPS route file attached.

Ride 2.  Dulwich to Crystal Palace. < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dulwich-to-crystal-palace-cycle-ride-tickets-794858241397 >

Amanda leading. About 10 miles. Start 10am, finish around 12.30 (allowing time for a coffee break).  This is a route we have done several times, most memorably in February 2019 with snow on the ground in Crystal Palace Park (see photo with ride report at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-jan-march2019.html).  Start across to Peckham Rye Park then over the hill at Nunhead and down to the Waterlink Way at Ladywell Fields. Follow the off-road Waterlink Way (Nat Route 21) for nearly 2 miles to Lower Sydenham. Continue on quiet streets to Cator Park followed by a loop through Penge to Crystal Palace Park.  Check out the dinosaurs, then up the hill to Crystal Palace Parade.  Steep in places, but plenty of time to walk stretches if necessary (you will not be the only one doing this!).  Finish with a delightful run downhill back to Dulwich Park.  Route map https://goo.gl/rfUzwn

Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index links at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • Most women are killed by someone they know, not a stranger. However I think all women moderate their behaviour when on their own, walking at night especially as they fear danger. Two interesting articles https://www.statista.com/statistics/288298/female-victims-of-homicide-england-and-wales-by-relationship-to-offender/?srsltid=AfmBOoqZ9-CIEJWe9kesKy2G_KWxjXPh-tXMRsLvKim0M6mS00dksiKH https://www.theguardian.com/education/2025/sep/23/majority-of-girls-and-young-women-in-uk-alter-behaviour-to-feel-safe-study-finds?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other   Other crimes https://crimerate.co.uk/london personally I always go for the most crowded train carriage late evening and I carry my keys in my hand when walking from the train station…. It’s that fear of violence that is scary …
    • What ever they decide I would have thought that the skate park would not be staying but really hope I am wrong as in my minds eye, I see the skate park as potential parking spaces after all if it is going to be community, flats, retail units, cafe, etc folks are going to want to have the parking availability - Amir like the parade of shops opposite. if the skate park goes then I think it is Dulwich Estate obligation to find another suitable area… a lot of community spirit and hard work went into developing the skate park and the youngsters should be very proud of what they have done  and achieved.
    • Hi all My car was stolen between 1.30pm-1.50pm today in SE22 East Dulwich in South East London. I have of course reported this to the police but not much is being done, so I thought I'd give this a shot. The registration is GM66YOV, though its possible the licence plate may have been changed by now. If you see it anywhere please contact me or the police. Thankyou!
