two free sociable cycle rides Sat March 23rd

On the 23rd we have 2 rides planned. Bruce has a new short ride showcasing the no longer missing link of Cycleway 4, Jamie leads his annual pre-boatrace all day outing.

Coordinating Instructions and Timings
Riders will meet at 10.00am on Saturday 23rd March at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge.
A short safety briefing will be given at 10.00am.
The ride should arrive back at Waterloo Station before 4pm. 

Mission
To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile course of the 169th Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race up the Middlesex bank of the Thames from the Race start point at Putney embankment to the finish at Chiswick Bridge by Mortlake.
The race first started in 1845 and is always held on a flood tide with the crews rowing with the current. This years televised Boat race itself takes place on the following Saturday,30th March with
the Women’s Race starting at 2.46pm followed by the Men’s Race starting at 3.46pm. 

Route
This is a circular route that involves some great river views and enjoyable cycling in stages for about 20 miles in all. The route out is mostly along quieter roads and some river paths and is thus suitable for competent rider abilities.
The return route is predominantly on cycle lanes, via Hammersmith, Kensington Gardens, Buckingham Palace and back to Waterloo.

Rations and Water
We will stop at Waitrose for 15 minutes shortly after leaving Waterloo to purchase sandwiches etc for lunch before heading for the Race start point at Putney Pier.
Our 30 minute coffee stop will be at the stunning Bishops Palace on the northern river bank.
We will stop for lunch near the finish at Chiswick Bridge. 

Checks and Equipment
Riders are urged to pre-check their bikes e.g. A = Air in tyres, B = Brakes, C= Chain & gears etc.
Riders are further advised to bring: a warm fleece, waterproof top/trousers & bike lock.

10am start, Southwark Gateway Needle, south side of London Bridge, close to London Bridge Station. Outward use Cycleway 4 now completely segregated from traffic all the way from Tower Bridge to Deptford Creek. Light segregation on first short section from London Bridge and final section off road to Cutty Sark. Return using Cycleway 10, joining at Creekside and leaving at Tower Bridge Road to get back to London Bridge via Bermondsey St. Each leg will take about 1 hour. Will allow 2½ hours so that we can have a break at Greenwich. This ride is on segregated cycleway, off road path or easy streets throughout and so is suitable for any level of cyclist and with plenty to see is family friendly. Bruce leading.  Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.     • you're missing the point and come across as just being disagreeable.   I'm therefore just going to close this - as it;'s not a debate or an argument   DRIVERS  - please pay extra care as there are cyclists who are very low visibility and without lights or suitable clothing CYCLISTS - Put lights on your bike - front and back - and reflective strips at the very least. Consider other road users and pedestrians.  EVERYONE - Be safe    
    • There is no law about what people must wear when cycling. The highway code also suggests that pedestrians might want to wear bright clothes in order to make themselves more visible, but I don't think many people actually follow that advice. I think people should wear what ever they feel comfortable in. You shouldn't have to wear 'special clothes' in order to use a bicycle, or to take a walk. Seeing as you pose a far higher risk to others when you're travelling by car, there is arguably a far greater moral duty on you to consider how colourful your car is, than how brightly you dress as a pedestrian or cyclist. There are laws about lights. I agree that people should have lights on at night.  There are invisible cyclists? 🤣 You have no sympathy for someone travelling perfectly legally by bicycle, with good lights and reflectors, and who is hit by a driver paying insufficient attention, if they're not wearing bright clothing? And does the same view extend to pedestrians? From the highway code:
    • Cyclists who chose not to follow advice, guidance or rules specific to visability in poor light conditions choose the risks they run and I see no reason for sympathy when their luck runs out. However, I do feel sympathy both for pedestrians hit by invisible cyclists, and obviously those with visual or hearing impairment which adds to their risk on the pavements or road, and to drivers who may hit these invisible cyclists and suffer guilt or trauma having done so. And anyone who wishes to suggest that a cyclist so hit is not to blame because it's always the drivers fault can go hang.  Why do you think the rules and guidance exist in the first place?
