two free sociable cycle rides Sat May 4th

Recommended Posts

On the 4th May we have 2 rides planned. Bruce leading a longish ride on a broad sweep across SW London and Simon S. with an intriguing short ride in the north of the borough.

Ride 1.  Four Commons and Two Windmills.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/four-commons-and-two-windmills-cycle-ride-tickets-893901472367 >

From Dulwich a 26km (16 mile) sweep across SW London through not just 4 commons and past 2 windmills, but also including 3 major parks and 2 prisons! Lots to see. Start 10am, allowing 4 hours, so a late lunch. Start/finish location: Dulwich Clock Café, Dulwich Park, in the middle of the park. Anticlockwise route via Brockwell Park, Brixton Mill and Prison, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common, Prison and Windmill, Tooting Bec, Streatham Common, Norwood Park and Crystal Palace Park. Mostly quiet streets and paths. Several photo stops and a coffee stop somewhere. Should be a fun ride taken at our usual easy pace. Ride leader Bruce.  Ride 2. The Longest Street < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-longest-street-cycle-ride-tickets-893842505997 >

Believe it or not, Rotherhithe Street is claimed, at 1.5 miles, to be the longest street in London (eg. see https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/rotherhithe-street and https://southwarknews.co.uk/news/the-fascinating-history-of-rotherhithe-street-londons-longest-road/). It is also an old street and passes several interesting places including the Mayflower Pub, the Brunel Museum and tunnel, the Bascule Bridge, and Surrey Docks Farm.

Start time 10am, Simon S. leading. Start/finish Peckham Square (Peckham library, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY). Duration 2.5 hours. Route to and from Rotherhithe will be quiet streets or paths. Outward route wandering through Camberwell and Walworth to Cycleway 4. Return via Southwark Park where there will be a coffee stop. We did this ride last year, report at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2023/ride-reports-april-29th-2023/Route map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1-a0LRYP3NIjFcSfi_oVWoj14XsAdKwM&usp=sharing

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.
