Recommended Posts

Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, links below.

On the 18th May we have 2 rides planned, one long and one short. Long ride will head northeast to Wanstead Park while the short ride will be a largely traffic free meander downstream beside the Thames.

Ride 1.  Greenwich to Wanstead Park.  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/greenwich-to-wanstead-park-cycle-ride-tickets-904603271737  >

Start 9.00am at Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Note the early start. Hope to finish back at Greenwich at 1.30, but with uncertainties on a long ride please allow for possible 2pm finish. Route out: round Thames path to London Cable Car across river. Then on to Beckton Corridor off road path and round past Beckton Alps, bit of cycle path and back streets to Wanstead Park, maybe part along River Roding. Return across Wanstead Flats, quiet streets to Olympic Park, Hertford Union Canal, Regents Canal Towpath/Mile End Park, west side of Isle of Dogs to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. If the lifts are working, complete ride by crossing to the Cutty Sark. If not, end the ride at the tunnel. If required riders who wish to cross will be guided to Mudchute DLR Station where there is step free access. There is also step free access at Greenwich DLR station. Note this is a long route with a lot of continuous riding. We will be at our usual easy pace, but probably cycling for 3 hours +. You get a rest on the Cable Car (remember to bring some way of paying the fare) and a coffee break. Nevertheless worth bringing a snack and a drink. Ride Leader – Amanda.

 Ride 2. Canada Water to the O2  < https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/canada-water-to-the-o2-cycle-ride-tickets-904610874477 >

Flat and almost all traffic free or segregated path – a ride for all abilities. Start 10am from Deal Porter Square, next to Canada Water Library and opposite Canada Water station. Possible to join the ride at Cutty Sark, next to the Foot Tunnel, at 10.25. Follow Cycleway 14 to Thames at Greenland Dock, then Thames path to the O2. Some really nice riverside cycle path to enjoy. If things go well could make it as far as the Barrier. Return across the N Greenwich peninsula, bit more Thames path past Cutty Sark, then stretch of Cycleway 4, getting back to Canada Water at around 12.30. Ride Leader – Bruce.

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.

Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe (note there is a lot of shared path on these ride). If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. How to cancel link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/575010/how-to-cancel-your-free-registration/

Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/

    • I haven't had a rude EVRI delivery but last week I had an unexpected delivery at 10.42 pm. He didn't ring the bell or knock on the door (or rattle the letter flap) but just took a photo and put the box down.  If it hadnt been for the door camera giving us a beep we would never have known there was a parcel ready to sit there all night.
    • Sorry if I’m being slow but there’s no point in having a gate then is there?  Would have thought it was basic manners to respect someone’s property
    • I didn't say wedge it "slightly" open. I meant to wedge it fully open.
    • I have a rescue Spanish greyhound (galgo) from the charity mentioned above. You can contact Greyhounds in Need or one of the more local Kent greyhound rescue charities. They are fantastic family dogs. They do love walkies 2 or 3 times a day but they actually don't need to be walked too far and then they will happily loaf around on the sofa being very chill. They are brilliant with kids but not recommended if you own a cat as they have a strong prey drive. They also should be kept on the lead in local parks. They prefer to be around other sight-hounds (well my one does) and there are loads of local sighthound owners in Peckham, Crystal Palace etc and a very lively WhatsApp group that is brilliant if you need dog sitting as you can usually find someone to do that for free in return for you looking after the dog at a later date etc.
