Recommended Posts

For Weekend 1-2 June we will have 2 rides. On June 1st a regular Healthy Ride to Abbey Wood/Lesnes Abbey. On Sunday June 2nd there will be a special short ride aimed at people who have enjoyed the Freecycle Event this Sunday (26th). This will start at the same time and location as the Freecycle feeder ride, 10am, Peckham Rye Park. Details below.
Please register on Eventbrite so we can control the numbers. Links for June 1st and 2nd below.
9.30 am to 1.00 pm. Start/finish Cutty Sark, next to the tunnel entrance. Note the slightly earlier 9.30 start. Amanda leading. 20 mile route that largely follows the river, keeping to the south side. Outward takes the Thames path round the Greenwich peninsula and continues to Woolwich and Thamesmead. After an ascent of the famous Thamesmead Tor, heads inland to Lesnes Abbey and a well-deserved coffee break with time for a quick look at the ruins of the Abbey. On the return use more of the linear, elevated, Ridgeway path to Woolwich, then Thames path again until the Ecology Park at N Greenwich. Cut across the peninsula to save your legs and finish along a short stretch of Thames path to Cutty Sark. High proportion of this route is on off-road paths. Loads to see, including riding past the O2, Thames Barrier and the steel men (“Assembly” by Peter Burke) at Woolwich Arsenal. Everyone welcome, but please note that although riders of all ages take part in Healthy Rides those under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.  Note we are requiring a mobile number on registration for this ride.
Meet Peckham Rye Park Café (“The Round”) at 10am. Special Sunday ride to follow on from Freecycle. Suitable for family groups and all sorts of cyclist. 9 mile circuit.  Return to start approx. 12 noon.  About 1½ hours easy-paced cycling and 30 min of breaks.  As well as Peckham Rye Park, will visit Burgess Park, Myatts Fields, Elam St Open Space, Ruskin Park and Dulwich Park. 55% off road path, 40 % quiet streets, 6% busy road.  At a few tricky junctions will dismount and use crossings. Everyone welcome, but please note that although riders of all ages take part in Healthy Rides those under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”.  To enquire about the suitability of this ride, please email  [email protected]. This ride is organised by Southwark Cyclists and is part of a regular programme of weekend rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.  Route at  http://tiny.cc/qgk7yz.  Note registration will not start until midday on Sunday 26th.

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
